I went digging through forums and found the post about engine/transmission issues:

http://www.toyotadiesel.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1972

You may want to email jcm55 to see what he learned

I would LOVE something like this:

If my sammie ever gets "rooned", I woudl be very interested in a Tercel 4wd diesel swap!

here are some pics of my tercel... i bought this one for $80. the guy said the engine was bad, so i swapped the engine. got her going in a weekend. this is the 3rd one I've owned, first one i totaled, the second got stolen.

these pics are from when i took her to do a radio survey for work, and a huge storm hit. you guys in California remember the storm, the huge one that his the first week of January.

She is steaming because i drover her through a 3ft deep flooded spot. water was over the hood. don't know how she didn't suck water.

i wanna put a sticker on the back that says "you got your A$$ passed by 80 bucks"

Please keep posting about this as more info comes in! A 617 powered 4runner would be COOL!

We just got a plasma cutter. now all we need is time. we have the stock adapter plate for the 617. and we have a Toyota bell housing. its only a matter of having the time now. chances are we will start this project for real come summer.

what material are you making the adapter out of? 1/4" or 3/8" steel plate or something? My biggest worry in making an adapter would be that some bolts would not be usable due to interference from either the bell housing or the engine. Is this a potential problem? Also, how do you go about making sure everything lines up correctly? What do you use for reference? How will you deal with the clutch/flywheel/tranny interface? Please forgive my ignorance on the matter as I have never made an adapter or done an engine swap before...

Mercedes did half the work already. the Mercedes engine doesn't bell out to meet the transmission. the back of the engine is square, and an adapter bolts to that from the factory. we will just have to recreate the transmission adapter to bolt up to the Toyota transmission. using the crank shaft and input shaft as the centering point.

the Mercedes clutch disc is the same size as the Toyota clutch. so we are going use a Toyota clutch disc and Mercedes flywheel and pressure plate.

the existing Mercedes adapter plate is aluminum. but the first adapter plate will be made of steel because it is cheaper and easier for us to work with. (we are building it in the garage) once we get it down we are going to work with my friends brother, the owner of the shop talked about in the first post, about getting to use some tools to make it out of aluminum.

"The engine is a Toyota Turbo Diesel 1KZ 3.0 Liter Engine. It only has 62K miles on it, practically brand new for a diesel, and should last 200K to 300K miles. The engine was imported from Japan in a half-cut."
