Toyota Diesel

3 Attachment(s)
so I have this Toyota Tercel... the people who know me know i have this hidden love for this little 4x4 go cart of a car... well in my boredom i read about the Corolla that uses the same engine family as my tercel came with the 1C Toyota Diesel engine. now if i could get a diesel in my Toyota... that would be a dream come true.

SO.... since i know most of you are like me and enjoy looking at diesel engines, no matter who makes them, if anyone sees a Corolla Diesel.... let me know. I would love to just see a picture of this engine.

that said. I saw an awesome Toyota Diesel this weekend. a BJ-40 Diesel custom crew cab from South Africa. it was used for diamond mining. some how it made it to California. Here are some pics.

There are so many cool diesel "utility"vehicles in use everywhere but here in the USA, such a shame we can't get our hands on some.:mad::mad:

the BJ-40 is at my best friend brothers shop. the shop is a 4x4 Truck and Rack Crawling Custom shop. He has this one client that loves odd trucks and he does restorations for him. he has a Toyota Hilux Diesel, and a 300GD and that Land Cruiser, and an electric car from the 70s, and a bunch of other cars and trucks. pretty cool client. The green car behind the Toyota is the electric car.

I was going to ask about the electric car. I knew a guy who used one of those for commuting in Denver for quite a few years.

I used to have one of those toyota tercel 4x4's... what a great car. How many other station wagons have a low range?!?

I remember schlepping around a tercel 4x4 forum to see if you could swap in a toyota diesel engine... I seem to remember reading that none of the corrola diesel engines had the same transmission bolt pattern.

Toyota Crown

Back in Singapore, virtually every single taxi was a Toyota Crown diesel. I had a buddy who drove one as a 2nd job, and grew to love his taxi more than his regular car!

The crown was basically this very large comfortable vehicle with a back seat like a sofa and a boot that could accommodate 4 full-size golf bags easily. It had great pickup, amazing fuel economy, and was really easy to maintain. Because of the high-cost of taxi-ownership, the companies that rent them out, rent them at a really high price, so the taxis basically have to 'work' 24/7 with drivers switching places every 10 to 12 hours. After 6 years, the taxis are 'retired'. I never did found out where they went

On e-bay I have seen those Toyota Diesels come time to time. there are a
few sellers that sell engines from Japan, and Toyota, Nissan, Mitsubishi,
etc... Diesels are listed.

Interesting body mod on that Cruiser, what year is it? It looks a lot like my '75 FJ-40.

I thought our good ol' enviro friendly state here made it lillegal to convert between diesel and gasoline fuels yrs ago.....not saying a lot of people follow that rule, lol. But it is easier to do it from diesel to gas as far as getting around the smog checks.

Every so often you see a Camry turbodiesel on eBay. I believe the 1C-T is the same basic engine as the 1C in the Corolla only with a turbo.

Call the folks at Japan Parts USA in SSF. They are or were one of the bigger surplus engine importers. Their yard had the biggest selection of non-US engines I saw when I was used engine shopping.

Here's one - http://prestigemtrs.com/inventory/index.html?action=details&id=QZQgHi9oPdLpm4tMbFshFA

My dad had a FJ-40 diesel when I was growing up. I think the car was an '83 or so... don't remember exactly. Must have been a gray-market thing because they weren't sold in the US. WHAT A RIG!!! wow i wish he never sold it. That thing could go many places a Jeep of any variety couldn't even think about. 5 speed tranny made it downright sporty and fun to drive too. I have a non-turbo 617 just itching to go into something like that, so if anyone knows of a decent one without an engine in the $500 range, let me know LOL.

pleiades 02-13-2008 08:09 AM

Does your car have the 22-R (or RE) right now? That engine was used on Celicas, pickups, and 4Runners as well.

What I would give for a diesel 3rd generation Celica...

SirNik84 02-13-2008 11:16 AM

my car has the 1.5L 3A its not a bad engine for the car. but I've always wanted it to be a diesel. I HATE the carburetor on that thing. has about 25 vacuum lines. and people say the Mercedes vacuum system is complicated. if one of those lines goes bad or falls off and the car starts running like crap. I have a Hitachi carburetor off of a 72 Datsun 510 (no vacuum lines) that I'm going to install on it (when I'm not being smog tested) but even with that, its still not as cool as a diesel.

as far as that engine bolting up to the transmission... there is nothing that can't be modified.. if necessary. i thought about putting a 240D's engine in it, but the Toyota is just to small to accommodate it.

"3rd generation Celica"
I always wanted the 1st generation. they look like someone took a muscle car and made it 3/4 scale. but i do love those R series engines. i built a 22R with a 20R head. that thing was like a rocket. then i had a 22R-TE. thats the first Turbo i ever rebuilt, and good old Toyota built those things so crappy. it had a huge crack in the exhaust housing. still it was fun learning about turbos. sadly all those engines were for friends. the R series is also to large for the tercel.

my friend wants to build an adapter plate to install the 617 into his Toyota truck. the same adapter plate could be used to install a 617 into a Celica... I've been thinking about that...
