You will be wasting your $$ for this on the 300CD.

Yes it will work, and it poses a good alternative to opening your wastegate and adjusting the nut, which is a real pain.

speeddt I have got to respectfully disagree based on doing some test on my 1985 300D. I am not running my pressure line through the cut out solenoid to the fuel injector and have run the car with a boost gauge installed. Heck, based on observations while running up hill with the engine loaded I never saw more than about 12 psi boost. It is my opinion that these boost controllers are built for those haul butt Hondas/Toyotas, etc with the gasoline engines that are running a turbo that can put out 20+ psi where this could be utilized. I would be surprised if the 300SD is that much different from the 300D as far as the engine/turbo is concerned.

Jim,

The reason that you were getting no more than 12 psi boost, I think, it is because of the wastgate. There are two devices (three devices for 84 - 85 Calif 617 engines) to protect the turbo from overboot. You were only bypassing the ALDA. You need to deal with the wastgate also. I think the Turbo Boost Controller giving you the boost by bypassing the wastgate protection.

MB does not want you to overload the turbo and the engine. Once these overboost protection devices are properly working, the performance of these diesels is very reasonable. In fact they are faster than some of my previously owned gasoline cars (Toyota Van, Dodge Colt, VW Van, etc).

Thanks be - I did not realize that. I would guess then if someone wanted to get the full benefit out of the turbo boost controller they would have to crank the waste gate way up there and then use the device to suit them? As far as I can tell my 300D's wastegate is where it was when it left the factory.

The 617.952 motors are either equipped with a Garrett T3 turbocharger, or a Kuhnle Kopp Kausch unit which I'm unsure of the exact model number. The Garrett T3 is a very popular turbocharger and is used in aftermarket turbo kits for many Japanese cars.

My point is that when it comes to adjusting your turbo boost to the upper limits of "factory spec", a manual boost controller is a much better alternative to "spinning" around the spring to open up the wastegate, in order to adjust boost.

Read the fine print of the TURBO BOOST CONTROLLERS again and I agree with Speedy. It is a manual override for the wastegate. After time, the wastegate may be out of specifications. Instead of adjusting it back to spec that is hard to do, The Turbo Boost Controllers should let you restore the boost spec nicely. With the controller installed, I do not think you can overboost the system if the ALDA overboost protection is working. But if the ALDA circuit is clogged, installing the controller will not help.

Again, if everying works per specifications, there is no need for a Turbo Boost Contoller.
