injection pump W115 220D

I am trying to figure this out, I have a W115 220D the injection pump has no oil in it. Should I add oil, there is a little red cap, I un screwed it and checked there is no oil.
And my dad has nether taken oil out or put oil in in the last 22 years.
I was told this can be very tricky

IP oil level

These have their own oil reservoir and aren't fed by the engine like newer ones. You can't see the oil level through the top cap. It's not that bad, just tight quarters to work in. There is a plug about 2/3rds of the way down from the top on the left (drivers) side of the pump, roughly below the #4 injector line that you remove. You'll also want to be sure the car is on level ground. IIRC its a 13MM head. Then you add oil through the top under the red cap until oil comes out the hole where the plug came out. 30W is recommended. You may want a catch pan under the car as the oil likes to run down the front xmember. The plug is a bit of a bear to get to but it's the only way to know the level is correct. You can pour some extra oil in after it starts to come out the hole to flush it a little, then reinstall the plug after it has stopped draining. Hope that helps. Good luck.

* Not tricky. Remove red cap. Fill oil (same oil as motor) to proper level. Proper level is reached when the oil runs out the plug hole on the lower left side (with the plug removed). As I recall, there wasn't an easy way (drain plug) to drain out any old oil. That would require removing an inspection cover, which would likely require a new gasket/seal.

I did find that if I loosened the bottom of the 4 screws that holds the back lower cover on the pump that oil would slowly drain from it. But, the only half decent way to get to it is from under the car, which can complicate matters sometimes.
