Turn signals not self canceling
I have a 1982 300SD, as of yesterday, the turn signals won't self cancel. they flashers stay on after a turn when the wheel comes back to center position I can't figure out why. I thought it was the cold but I don't know. I'm not sure about how the mechanism works. The signals still work. Any ideas?

If it's set up as everything else I've ever worked on, (never had a steering wheel off a Benz yet) its a typical problem, where the plastic spring tabs have broken off of the part that "rocks" each way when you pull the lever. Those tabs ride along a collar attached to the rotating steering wheel, which has 2 bumps on it that push on those tabs to snap it back off @ center.

if the steering box was replacent and not lined up right with the wheel it will do that....drive around and do alot of turns and test to see if one blinker KINDA works maybe intermittently then it is for sure just the wheel.
if it is then you have to disconnect it from the steering box and re do it...kind of a pian though. |
Could be a failing combination switch. Grab another from a boneyard, if possible.

Pull out the switch and have a look.. If the plastic tabs aren't broken you probably can lube it up with WD40 or similar, I did this on my W111 and it worked like a charm afterwards.

the blinkers themselves work all the time. they just don't cancel. both sides stopped working at the same time, right after it was really cold. I'm thinking they just need to be lubed.
