Unhappy Fuel Primer pump Help

Good morning I am having an issue with my 300D running. Changed both fuel filters which were really nasty. well we pumped the primer pump and ended up replacing the lines as they were leaking. Well now when we pump the primer pump fuel comes out the bottem . Is there any work around for this I miss my car it's been sitting for almost 2 weeks because when it does start it sounds like it is blowing up and then stalls.

You mention replacing lines - which ones did you replace?

Is the primer pump the original - white knob kind? Are you sure it's leaking from the pump? They are prone to leaking - and no, I don't there is a long term workaround, if it is.

It's an easy fix and cheap too - go up to "buy parts" tab pick up the newer, black bosch kind and somewhere in the archives is a pretty good DIY thread with pics on the replacement.

Not quite sure what to make of the "blowing up" sound.....but you probably have a ton of air leaking into your system.

If you have a vacuum pump like a mity vac, you can suck on the return line coming off the top of the spin-on fuel filter (the banjo bolt) and it'll draw fuel at least to there, filling up both filters. After that you can pump a couple times or you might be able to crank a little and get it to start.

Yah - I do remember another forum member having success with that awhile back (the primer pump had been hotglued shut or something?)

But still - that will only get you running the first time....you'll still have an airleak, I'd replace the pump.

I have the pump with the white knob I changed the return lines and the lines going to the primer pump. Im being told that it is running like crap because of Air in the fuel system sounds like a rod knock but 100 times louder. when I get it started and let off the pedal it shutsdown immediatley sound like a gas car running on 3 cyclinders
Thanks

Was the car running like this before you changed the filter and fuel lines? I didn't think air could leak into a leaky primer pump (if the handle is screwed all the way in). If you have air in the system, once you get it started it'll purge the air out. If you have an air leak, you'll have to go back over all your hose clamps and make sure everything is tight so no more air leaks in.

Yes, you may be introducing air in the system via the failed primer pump, replace as soon as you can.
Start there.

When did it start running so bad that it just died, Tell us how long youv'e had it and how it ran when you got it. The fuel filters may need changing, valves adjusted. Whats the history of the car, ran OK before you got it?

i just had the same issues and tried the vacuum trick and cranked and cranked. only solution for me was a primer pump. the dealer had it in stock for $38 if youre in a hurry or buy it here on shopfrum if you have time. install primer pump, loosen the line at the spin on filter housing with the out arrow that goes to the IP and pump the primer until fuel comes out at the loosened fitting. tighten the fitting and pump the primer until the IP makes a hiss/buzz noise. then it will start right up like before.

You dont have to loosen any fitting, it vents, just pump and pump some more till you hear a different pitch in the sound.

The car was running awesome then i noticed a slight rought idle then noticed the return lines were leaking so I replaced them then replaced the Fuel filter the first and the secondary the filters were absolutly Disgusting with Chunks of I dont wanna know. and the 1st filter was so dirty it was black. and now when I do get it started it sounds like a bomb clacking and it just turns off like it is starving for fuel.

Now on the primer pump when I do try to pump it leaks diesel at the bottom and even comes out the top and you can hear it sucking AIR. But could it still be sucking air if the primer pump is closed?

Thanks everyone

mine sounded like that too, im pretty sure I had air in my IP. I even went so far as to loosen the injector lines to find it was only getting fuel on the rear 2 cylinders. sounded just like you described before it quit and wouldnt start again. you need to bite the bullet and replace the primer to get the air out your IP.

So it was running awesome not too long ago. Then it started idling rough...that could be caused by the clogged fuel filters...and then you changed the filters, and here we are. So you weren't sucking in air through the primer pump before (well maybe you were, but it wasn't causing a big problem), so you can probably get by for now with the leaky pump if you can just get the air purged.

When you replaced the spin-on filter, did you fill is with diesel or marvel myster oil or something? This would eliminate a lot of pumping. If you can't get a primer pump immediately, you can get one of those egg-shaped in-line pumps that are used for outboard motors and such. Put that in-line before the primer and prime it with that until you can replace the primer. But it really sounds like you need to push some diesel though the IP to get rolling.
