1983 300D for sale in PA

Not mine - nor affiliated.....but sombody needs to pick this thing up (literally, tranny is blown).

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170194270543&ssPageName=ADME:B:WNARL:MOTORS:1123

Chad300tdt and I were discussing this car a couple weeks back....apparently it didn't meet the seller's reserve price and is back.

Overall - looks to be a solid car with a ton of extra parts thrown in for good measure. I think the bidding stopped around $1000 the last time up....so I'm guessing his reserve is only lightly higher than that now.

He claims it's not driveable and couldn't be driving up onto a trailer - but I'm not sure how he took those photos then? I suppose he could have rolled it down the hill and towed it around (or previously taken)....but it seems suspicious....or maybe I'm just jaded by every ebay listing nowadays.

I remember that one now. The interior looks excellent and it comes with some additional parts too. The seller states that 1st gear is blown but it runs well. I need to start playing the lottery or something so I can take advantage of things like this.

tranny needed for it?

Would a tranny from a mid ( 83-85 range I think) 300SD fit this? I have a friend in PA with a rusty car but good driveline. He may be able to use this as a good commuter.

I don't know if that trans would fit, but you can get a used one cheap enough to make this an affordable daily driver ... affordable if you have the money right now.

That's a good question CSchmidt - I personally don't know. Do you know his tranny number or VIN? Here's the russian site info.....I doubt an SDL tranny is from the same series but maybe a 722...or at least very close. Tranny issues not withstanding - it probably a good deal.

The trans from a SD would work....all you'd have to do is switch the tailpiece from the 300D tranny onto it so it had the mechanical speedo drive. OR, you could install an electronic speedo from an SD into the cluster....either way works. I also have a good 300SD tranny laying around....I wish that car was closer....I'd bring it back to life.

How much would you be willing to bid on that pawoSD? Tranny swap doesn't sound too painful.

I'm really tempted but my tax return has been earmarked for other expenditures.

Just checked - still hasn't hit reserve price. I emailed the seller about it and he hasn't replied.

It sounds like a project someone gave up on (probably for a reason). I would be very careful of rust in that part of the world. Based on the looks of the body, this may be a parts car.

I would say this car looks pretty good as far as rust is concerned, plus the interior is VERY nice. Of course you would need to see it in person to get the true story, but most classic MB's I see around here are MUCH worse off unless they didn't start life here to begin with. Look at the bottoms of the doors, the jack holes and lower panels, they all look solid in the pics. I'd still want to see the floors and the seam underneath and look in the trunk better.

Rust? Awww....Craig, Por15 is my middle name.....that car looks better than mine. Seriously though - what did you see that concerned you? The jack holes didn't look THAT bad....and the bottom of the doors weren't horrific.

If I remember correctly from his original listing - it was a weekend driver for his stepdaughter or something - now he's divorced and moving away? But yeah, with all the parts going with it - definately a project car that he's walking away from.....but I was thinking it was more of personal thing vs. the car not being worthy. I'm also naive.

I see Por15 is your middle name too.....or are we just looking thru rusty-colored glasses?

That's what I was just thinking. Craig just took a tag team from rust belt residents. He probably thinks the same when people complain about snow.

To me, the body looks pretty tough and the interior only looks fair in the photos. I agree that you would need to see it in person to evaluate it. I would look at the floor very carefully. I would just go shopping for a southern car. Any rust is too much.
