Front seal replacement

Hey guys,

Have not been on here in a while, could not remember if there was a link to help me with replacing the front crank seal. Going to do that and the oil pan at the same time.

What all do I have to do to R&R the front seal???

Thanks Doc.

Sorry guess it would help if I told you what the car was...

Except for aligning the balancing disc when reinstalling, it's a very easy job. I would recommend that you also plan on replacing the crankshaft spacing ring.

The spacer is on the crankshaft behind the balancing disc. The seal lip actually rides on the spacer. Typically, the old seal will have worn a groove in the spacer, so a new one will go a long way toward ensuring that the new seal does not leak. Sometimes, the wear is offset from the center of the spacer enough that the spacer can be reversed and reused. Other times, the wear is too close to the center and you need a new spacer. Apparently, not all seals are created equally when it comes to depth.

Be careful with the dowel pins on the crankshaft. There are a number of posts explaining how to install them correctly. It's a known failure point and a challenging repair if anything goes wrong.

What did you mean when you mentioned that you were "going to do the oil pan at the same time?"

If your going to the trouble of moving everything for the front crank you might as well so everything in the front of the engine. See my post above.

Sorry guys, didn't mean to leave you hangin..

My lower oil pan has been leaking also, so I am going to do it along with the seal.

Once again thanks for all the help and links..

In that case, you might consider renewing the turbo drain grommet and seals.
And possibly the oil pump pick-up screen, depending on its condition.

I might add that there are a number of other items that can leak oil that runs down to the lower oil pan gasket and make it appear that the gasket is the culprit, when it's not.
