Filering Hydraulic fluid and fuel pump pressure.

Hi, all! My dad recently found out that the place where he works just "throws out" there used hydraulic fluid. I did some looking around on Google and found that some people have used hydraulic fluid in diesel motors. I was just figuring out how in the world I might possibly be able to filter it. Would a normal hydraulic oil filter work? And if so could I hook it up in a fashion before the primary pump? Does it needed to be filter before it hits the tank? Or does it only needed to be filtered before the injection pump. And if so will the lift pump be able to push it through. (Still not sure how the fuel system of this car is set-up...could someone enlighten me.) Sorry for all the questions. You can blame a youthful inquisitive mind. THANKS!

I am sure this has been said on here about various other "alternative fuels" but oils, other that TC-W3 two stroke oil are not meant to be burnt!!! Hydraulic fluid, depending on the manufacturer, is one of the most detergent rich oils available, i.e. lots of stuff that doesn't burn worth a damn. So if you don't mind changing rings and cleaning your valve stems every 20K miles you can go ahead and fuel away. Otherwise, stick to a mass processed Dino Diesel or Biodiesel fuel.

A hydraulic fluid used in aviation, known as skydrol, comes to mind. If you did not use specific o-rings, they would dissolve and you would have massive hydraulic leaks. (Think about that, at altitude.)
Consequently, you could completely ruin your injection pump, not to mention all the remaining rubbers and plastics in your fuel system by using hydraulic fluid which may have these detergents.

The o-rings your referring to wouldn't happen to be Viton (sp?) o-rings? But, thanks for the info because...to rebuild the fuel pump would be 800$. (which I don't have) But, yeah that is a scary thought. What would those detergents be?

Just don't do it. Recycle the hydraulic oil properly and forget about using it as a fuel.

Ok not gonna use it as fuel, check. But, what are the detergents not designed to burn. And what is the operating pressure of the fuel pump that was paired with the Om617.xx?(or are there three x's) Oh and I searched on Google the o-rings your referring to are NOT Viton (in fact Viton is a trademarked item) but, rather something else. Actually the information I found showed that all o-rings used in hydraulic set-ups were not compatible with petroleum based fuels. Isn't that NEAT! But, aren't detergents needed to prevent gummy buid ups and certain deposits. Then however, the same detergents emulsify water reducing filterability which would cause some pretty bad problems. Unless if you kept the wter content below a tenth of a percent right? Or am I missing something?
