1984 300TD Wagon Manual Sunroof Operation?
Since I don't have an owners manual, I was wondering if somebody could describe the operation of the manual sunroof... I tried to open it once and it was sticky, so I didn't want to force anything. I realize that you pull the handle down, then turn to disengage. From there, should the window just slide back into the roof? How far back does it go? If it doesn't slide smoothly, is it just a matter of greasing the rails with mercedes sunroof grease?
Glad that I have a manual roof as opposed to electric... those sound like a nightmare to repair! Thanks! |

That's how it should work! When you turn the handle, the sun roof should drop down from the opening, and then you should be able to push it back into the roof.
If it's not doing that, then it needs some lube...

Someone here aptly called the opening of a sun roof the Zeig Heil. If it is sticky you might want to look at the felt as well.. This tends to tear up with age. I have a manual sunroof in my wagon and electric in the 300d. Its a planned future down?grade for the sedan.

Aaron, did you say "window?" Yours is glass? I have the same car, but mine is solid.

Sorry about that, mine is solid as well, not glass. Thanks for the tips guys, I'm going to hold off on trying to open it until it stops snowing here in DC... that would be a cold (and somewhat comical) ride home if it stuck open!

Mine was "stuck" when I first got my wagon too. I just unlatched it from the inside and put a little down pressure on it from the outside and pop goes the weasel...it's been fine since.

When I turn the handle on mine to open it, I used to be able to pull back and the handle stayed vertical.
Now, when opening it, the handle angles back at 45 degrees. I know something is being stressed, so I actually just unlatch it and open the roof by putting my fingers in the handle indentation enough to crack it open, then I use my hands on the roof door itself. When closing after the reverse handle twist, it stays vertical, allowing leverage to close it. What happened? Is it an adjustment that can be made to fix, or do I need to replace some component? I remember reading about some tight spring in the mechanism that can easily be lost, so I my hope is that there's some relatively easy thing to do without disassembling the whole latch mechanism.

I just finished replacing the front & real seals on my W123 sunroof (the front being the job from hell) and during the readjustment process, I noticed that the temperature makes a big difference on the ease of sliding things. I would clean the sliding feet and the rails and then lube the rails w/sicone spray. Also the closing arms should be lubed w/graphite oil. The felt side strips being worn shouldn't make your roof hard to slide - just the opposite - less felt, less resistence.
I too have experienced the thing of the handle pulling back at a 45* angle when at one time it remained straight. It shouldn't make any difference though as the roof is very light and quite easy to move if properly adjusted and lubed. Go figure.

Just make sure you have several days of sunny weather or a good tarp, Joe.

I have a functioning sunroof!
Thanks for the advice guys... I just had to give it a little "pop" from the top and it unstuck and slid right back... now I just have to replace the crumbled weatherstripping. Ugh... any words of wisdom on this task?

the gaskets for the sunroof?
might involve remove the sunroof. While you're in there might as well get the proper Mercedes slide grease and have at it |
