Changed oil, now transmission won't shift
The transmission in my 300D turbo has been acting funny lately so I changed the oil last Saturday in hopes that it may help. It would drop out of reverse and it was slow to engage. I drained all the oil in both the pan and torque converter and changed the filter. I refilled with Dex/Mercon and added a quart of Lucas Transmission Treatment. It worked fine for a test drive, then later this week it stopped shifting properly. Now it will not shift unless I bump the shifter to neutral and let off the fuel for a second.
I think I might have used the wrong kind of fluid and/or should not have used the Lucas treatment. I guess I will drain it again tomorrow and replace the oil with ?? Dextron III ? Thanks for your help. Kevin Williams 83 300D Turbo 210,000 miles Louisiana |

That or your shifter bushings are worn out.

How hard is it to replace those?

it sounds like coincidence, my guess is the piston kit needs to be installed.
what kind of problems were you having before you changed the fluid?

Before I changed the fluid, the transmission would take 2 or 3 seconds to engage, especially when cold. But it shifted fine. Also, sometimes it would drop into neutral for a second while backing up. The transmission was rebuilt a couple of years ago.

Now that there is more info, I had a Chevy do that to me. A month later the T/C grenaded and took out the front pump, which then ended in a tranny that sounded like a grinding power steering pump when the engine was running, with no foward or reverse.
Before the tranny finally went south, it felt like it was put in neutral, or it would take a bit to engage. Once going it shifted fine also. So I would not worry about the shifter bushings like I said earlier. Also, when the tranny was rebuilt, it is possible they stabbed the converter wrong on the input shaft.

Problem resoved.
I feel a little foolish but I added a half a quart of fluid and now it shifts fine. However, the dipstick shows a little over full. When the transmission was cold, the fluid level was just below the bottom line. So I added a little and the problem resolved. But when it warmed up, the level is about a half inch above the top line. I guess this transmission is fussy about the fluid level. Sorry for bothering everyone when I overlooked something so obvious.
