Exhaust Fumes in Car

My 300D has gradually been putting out some exhaust/burnt motor oil smell actually into the car. It makes me very queezy and I think a little high. Not cool. It does smell worse w/ the vent/heater on. However I can smell it at all times. Any suggestions?

possible exhaust leak, does there seem to be a whistle (not turbo spool) in the engine compartment. either manifold gasket or collector.

Carbon Monoxide

Yeah, When you run into a tree because you have lost consciousness...

EXHAUST LEAK!(I'm shouting in case you are already Cyanotic.)

STOP DRIVING THE CAR UNTIL YOU FIND AND FIX THE LEAK!

Bad oil leak under the hood? Check for oil dripping on the exhaust manifold.

There is virtually no carbon monoxide in diesel exhaust so you don't have to worry about that.

I wuold look at the firewall for a failed seal allowing engine smells right in. Could also be an exhaust leak at the same time or as previously suggested just an exhaust leak.

I sometimes have pretty bad fumes in the car at traffic lights depending on wind direction...

Exhaust Manifold- really?
This is the exact same smell that I have when I pop the hood. I do think that it is something to do w/ either a fuel leak or oil leak.

My former 87 300D had a bad oil leak from the tranny and that car smelled awful when you got out of it. Luckily I never smelled anything while I was in it.

my SDL had a cracked area in the exhaust expansion sleeve. It was a PITA to replace, and it took a while to get the soot cleaned off the windshield interior.

Does anyone think that it might have something to do w/ a clogged air filter or the breather hose on the air filter housing???

?

'Clogged air filter will affect performance(It will be a "DOG" on rollout)
(and cause lots of smoke from unburned diesel in the exhaust).

If by "Breather Hose" "On the air filter housing" you mean the vent hose
line from the top of the valve cover to the top of the Air Cleaner?
If THAT hose is missing or disconnected, you will most certainly have an
oil mist from the valve chamber introduced into the engine compartment.

Yeah I have finally gotten that hose to stay put. I really have no idea what it could be. I suppose I will have to take it to my local indy.

I had a similar issue; sometimes the exh could be detected in the cabin..more noticeable when stopped at a red light. I inspected the exhaust system and was surprised to find that the muffler case was rusted through...at the top! When I initially looked at the muffler I looked only at the bottom and did not see anything suspicious. The more thorough second inspection revealed the problem. There was a big piece of the muffler case missing at the top, by the inlet.

Something like a top missing section of muffler would certainly have left a good soot stain on the floor pan.
