Broken Exhaust Pipe
I took my 84 300D Turbo to a MBZ mechanic for an overall inspection. Among other things, he said the exhaust pipe is broken at the turbo flex pipe. What is involved in repairing this? And is this something that a neophite like me can do?
Thanks! |

Do it right, buy a new or nice used pipe and pay someone to install it. IMO by the time you mess with rusty bolts it's not worth your time, unless of course you have access to a lift and a fire wrench!!

I just bought a new pipe and installed it, it wasn't that hard. You just have to remove the air cleaner assembly to get at the connection to the turbo. The bolts on the turbo are copper so they don't rust/corrode, but you might want to get new ones just in case. (three of them)

It's the bolts at the other end of the header pipe that can be a pita. It's a nut and bolt combo x 2. You might need a couple of new ones in case they snap off in the process.

Even though mine looked super rusty and such and I figured the bolts would break.....using a bunch of penetrant + heat and they came loose ok without breaking, I was even able to re-use them! In michigan! Amazing!
