I'd suspect you don't have it set up correctly. You need to tell it what kind of engine, fuel and tank capacity you have before it will read right. Then you need to "tweak" it when you fillup once or twice just to calibrate it. Usually that will do it. Did you set it up following the instructions in the manual?

96 e300d here, and with my scanguage, once the initial settings are made, I find that my fill up will be within 1/2 to 1 gallon of what my scanguage says it "thinks" I used. Fantastic little tool to say the least!!

I set it up with Diesel A, 3.0 liter and the capacity.

Pimpernell - what do you have programmed as the capacity of your fuel tank?

Did you follow the proper calibration method for entering the "fillup" amount too? It sounds like maybe that setting is way off.

Full tank capacity on these cars is about 21 gallons. I set mine to 20 to be safe.

If it is not that then I would suspect there is something wrong with either the scangauge or your OBDII computer, but I'd start with trying another scangauge (they should replace it under warranty I would think).

Owners manual for my 96 e300d says I have a 16.4 gallon tank, which includes the reserve, and thats what I have programmed in the scangauge.

yeah I put 18 gallons in mine regularly, so I know it holds more than that. I guess I need to redo the calibration.

Does anyone know how Scan Gauge measures mpg in a diesel vehicle? I suspect they are using MAF and VSS, but what air/fuel stoichiometric ratio are they "assuming" (14.7:1 is for gassers). What fuel density are they using and is it adjustable? Is there a Lambda correction reading available?

Thanks.

There were diff size tanks in the 96/97's. I thnk they got 60 and/or 70 liters. The 98/99's got 80l tanks.

Enter your vin and check yours. http://old.mbclub.ru/mb/vin/?lng=eng
