W123 Steering Box Question

What are members paying for....

1) Reman steering box
2) Indy shop replacement bill, re: steering box.
3) Indy shop cost/bill to replace all steering box seals.

I've got a leaking steering box, and it needs to be fixed.

Thanks. Oh, and if anybody has a good steering box for sale...just sayin'

Not sure...it's wet oily mess. I'm assuming that all the seals are bad.

I planned on doing that first. Before spending any money. I just wanted to get an idea of cost to repair, worst case.

The thing is oily top to bottom, including hoses, but I'll clean and take a better look.

My oil cooler lines were leaking due to the worn out mounts and they leaked directly onto the steering box. Just thought I'd let ya know.

I would bet it is caused by seeping hoses.

Not sure but close guess is

I had a new steering box put in to my old 79 300SD. ( G-d what a beautiful car!)

My indie bill was 400.

I am planning on putting a new one in to my 83 300CD sometime soon. There is some play in the steering and I like it tight when I hit highway speeds...........

FWIW...The Indie tried to steer me away from a reman one...........

Aren't the re-man's like $600? How did you manage to have a mechanic put in a new one for $200 less than that including labor?

Our 300D could probably use a new steering box....its got a loooot of play in it. I'm bringing it in for "Free inspection" at the dealer sometime in the next week or so....then we'll see.

Yeah, my indy doesn't want to go the reman route due to cost. They want to replace seals. I'm going to make sure the hoses are weeping first though...

Update

So,

I didn't pressure wash due to lack of facilities. I did however degrease the box, hoses, and everything else that got gooped up from the leak.

It's been a week or more, yet no noticable leaks, or weepage have occurred. It's random leakage apparently.

From what I can see, the leak does appear to be coming from the bottom of the box (bottom seal?). Hoses seem to be doing their job just fine.

So no one has been able to answer my original post, i.e.:

What are members paying for....

1) Reman steering box
2) Indy shop replacement bill, re: steering box.
3) Indy shop cost/bill to replace all steering box seals.

I've got a leaking steering box, and it needs to be fixed.

Thanks. Oh, and if anybody has a good steering box for sale...just sayin'

I'm looking for an idea of a reasonable amount to pay, etc.
