after listening to the 1 st sound clip i would say you definately have some detonation in one or more cylinders.usually caused by late injection or poor atomization of the fuel.what you are hearing is the tap of the fuel explosion as it hits the piston crown. rather than a smooth burn going swoooosh you are are getting some uncontrolled combustion.possible causes include improperly balanced injectors, incorrect injection timing, air in injectors or pump, leaking injection pump seals, poor fuel quality or poor engine cylinder compression.quite a long list.whats the story on your injectors?

I took the injectors to a diesel shop, and I was told that spray pattern and pop press were fine 136-138 ball park, also they could tell that the injector had been serviced not long ago.

the Nozzles IMO the injector nozzles are original with 151k miles.

no fuel leak on top on the IP, but the clear fuel hose from the shutoff valve to the prefilter shows air after turning the engine off. ( change both of the pre-filter o-rings) no joy...

but don't know if PO tamper with the IP, how can one adjust it? and how easy it is to get it back to were it was before? ( I trace each line from the IP to each respective injector, the are ok)

took my car to a diesel mechanic, and said that the car was fine, that the engine sounded healthy. that it was normal..... I told him that I had heard other cars and they were much quieter. he said to me not to worry....

the nailing stops by 1/2 once operating temp is reach, and the A/C compressor is on the, but still I don't think is normal..but as soon the A/C compressor is out, it will start nailing the same... also while the glow plug cycle is on the engine is very quiet but gets loader after the cycle..

Ramtony,

I am going through a similar scenario ie shaky warm up after glow plugs cycle off and a slight stumble/misfire when warm. I fixed oil leak and replaced all seals and lines around injection pump. I have no air bubbles but have same scenario with prefilter described by you. MB dealer tech told me this is normal?!

Regarding the noisy injectors, I read a post that they do get quieter with time. That post suggested adding canola to make engine run quieter. I have no idea if this is even safe or works but the poster did write it. Perhaps someone with knowledge can chime in.

Can you please take your idle, while in Park, to about 1100 or 1200 rpm, when warm, and let me know if you feel a slight stumble? Hope you get fixed soon. TIA

JC

clearly the glow plugs are helping to combust the fuel and slowing down the pressure rise in the cylinder.carbon in the prechambers can help this way too beleive it or not.you did mention the head was off and i assume cleaned of all carbon.your mechanic seems to think its OK. i would go with his assesment.if only to give you some peice of mind

I have the same problem with my car for 6 months now and it's gettin worst...I'm reading anything I can, nothing seems to work.
I take the idle to 1200rpm while cold and the stumble is still there/SLIGHT miss...after the engine is warmed up to 80C then no more stumble miss.
I know only 1 fix that I performed on Volvo diesel. We rewired the glow plugs thru a Ford ignition relay then with a switch we would glow for 1 min while engine running aka. "after glow" and it would run like a champ every single morning even at 10F without being plugged in at nite. There is good/bad about doing that BUT it works and you know you'll get to work on time in the winter.

Have you fixed your nailing? I'm dealing with the exact same problem. I'm thinking about doing the DV orings and washers even though they are not leaking fuel. Can they still leak air? The nailing seems to be about half once warm. At start up I have a lot of white smoke and a stumble between idle and 2000rpm. Really annoying..

For all with OM606 nailing problems and poor running when cold, I can strongly recomend checking the compressions. Have a read of this recent OM606 nailing thread by WINGAS for more info on why.

OM606........nailing at idle.

thats about right for the EPA rating for these cars. Anyone who claims they get more than 25mpg i get really skeptical.

...........on a 606 powered W-210?? That's definitely below the average for most folks. I get 27-28 on an SDL with a 603 and on the SD with the 617. The W210 does better............

Unless you've changed tire size, got a fuel leak, are in love with the turbo, chipped it, or only drive in the city you chould easily get better than 25mpg.

I've gotten 30.5 mpg VERY consistiently on my 110 mile daily commute during the 125k miles I've put on mine. Thats 80mi at 80mph and 30mi at congested slow-n-go speeds. I check mpg's almsot every fill-up and generally fill-up at the same station and at the same pump every time.

I have no doubt that if I drove on the highway at a constant 65mph that mine would give me 34mpg or better.
