Fuel Valve Problem on 79 240D?

Today I went out and started my 240D, it was a little hard to start, but it cranked. I drove it a few miles and when I turned the key off it actually shut off - it has not been doing this for a couple of months. When I got back in it wouldn't start. Seems like it's not getting fuel. I pulled one of the return lines off and cranked it and no fuel came out. Also noticed that the trunk will now open without the key - wouldn't before. I just ordered a Mighty Vac to figure it all out, but this seems like a failure of the fuel valve or something in the ignition switch? Any ideas, is there a easy way to check the fuel valve?

Thanks

Pull the brown vacuum line off the IP "shut down switch" (silver, round, at the rear of the injector pump) and see if it will start, its easy and free.

Right, a few months ago using the key to shut off the engine stopped working, at that time I could turn the key off, lock the doors and eventually the car would shut off. At the same time the trunk would not open without the key, regardless of the position of the lock.
Today, for the first time, when I turned the key off, the engine shut down, and when I returned it wouldn't start. But, the trunk would open without the key.
I knew it was too good to be true.
