dirty trip odometer
I've noticed that the 1/10th mile dial on my trip odometer is very dirty and hard to see. Has anyone had this problem and cleaned the dial? I'm a little reluctant to mess with it only because my odometer works perfectly and I know they can be a weak point on these cars.

Its more likely wear from rotating so many times. I'd just leave it alone if its still working ok.

sure, they are very easy to clean with a q-tip and some iso alky... no issues so far.
if you pull your odo, be sure and check the aluminum gear on the odo for slipping. your odo may be working, but it may also be slipping occasionally. very easy to fix. when you go to pull it, take special note of the trip odo arm and end assembly spring, it is just sitting on the end of the shaft, if you loose the spring, you will need to take apart another odo to replace it...

If you pull out your odometer to do repairs to it, do you break a seal of some kind or something like that? I was wondering as I read this, since I've never seen one out of the car. It seems like it could be an issue because of laws against tampering with odos.

When cars are sold with over 100,000 miles they are generally considered "mileage exempt" from that stuff....so its the buyers risk how many miles are actually on the car.

It's simple!
1. Pull your guage panel out (Numerous posts about that)
2. get a q-tip wet with alcohol 3. Wipe off what you can see. 4. Use a small screwdriver where the odometer cable goes into the back of the speedometer to spin the numbers. 5. Wipe off what you can see. 6. Repeat 4 and 5 until you get back to where you started.
