No more loud diesel

I have had my 300D for 3 years now and its always been idling around 1k. Recently I put in new engine mounts and shocks and moved on to the rack dampener pin today.

It was screwed all the way in. I had a replacement on my shelf(gold).. but the original in the IP was not coming out easily.. I moved it out a bit (1 thread out) and put the idle down to 750 ish and boy is she quiet and idles smoooooth

I'll get some PB Blaster on that bolt to get it out.. I need to invest in some gear wrenches as well .... Big difference in noise and power now.

I need to play with my rack damper a little. I've tried before, and the bolt is adjusted in all the way. I have rough warm idle. I need to try backing it out some and see if anything changes.

1K is a bit fast, no wonder it sounds better now.

Had one this morning on a 83 300TD with 83,000 on it. I had thought needed a rack pin, it may still need it (adjusted all the way in), but we tried a LM diesel purge per the glass jar method this morning. Simply amazing, within 2 minutes the engine quieted down and ran smooth, on test drive afterward, a noticible difference was felt in acceleration as well. I'm a believer of the stuff now!

don,

i apologize if you already know this - but the rack pin (12mm) has a locknut (14mm). You need to loosen that first before you can move the rack pin. you probably did this -just making sure!

good luck,
dd

I usually keep my idle around 700-750 in the summer but during the winter I boost it to about 900ish (tach doesn't work so who knows...I turn the idle screw half a turn) but it can start and run on its own easier in the arctic temps at that rpm....which is very nice as I don't have to help it out.

its so weird having the idle at 750. I kinda liked the 1k idle. Made it sound like a cummins and let people know I was coming.

i got my idle down around 600-650. huge difference in MPG numbers from the 850 it was at originally. going from 1K to 750 you will definitely notice a couple mpg

Balancing your injectors and installing 265 nozzles can be a big help too!! My idle is nearly silent now and smooth as silk at 600ish rpm with 265 nozzles. Idle's without help at that speed when cold too... absolute wonder.. Many thanks to C Sean Watts!!

Could this be a glowplug issue. I am in FL, and it occassionaly gets around 32F, and the car starts up fine, it just runs rough for about a minute. Was wondering if my GP's are old.....or if that is normal...

that might be it. My RDP was all the way in and it had a rough cold idle with new plugs. Now its a lot smoother
