Vacuum issues solved with gauge
 

This thread is my follow up of this initial post regarding not being able to shut down the 85 240D -http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=213980

Until today I had a problem with with my son's 1985 240D. We could not shut it off. After requesting info and schematics on various vac systems, all new stuff to me, I starting blindly thinking that the vacuum pump was toast. I could not feel any pull at the main single "t" in the trunk vac line from pump to booster. My mity vac (US General- Harbor Freight) arrived the other day but too cold, wet or something to get started with it. Today after 15 minutes, problem solved. I first attached the pump to the T and got 25 " on the vac gauge. From there I figured that the pump was working and then systematically hooked the gauge into each Y connector and 4 way connector until I found less or no vacuum. I replace a 4 way,and a T both apparently leaking. But the main culprit was the purple line which I think goes to the climate control. We've disconnected it and will work on it at our leisure. If anyone has any vacuum issues, I would emphatically state that without a vac gauge, you're not gonna fix it.
BTW, the vac gauge/ pump/ self brake bleeder was $18 at Harbor freight. About $70 bucks at Sears. If you need it in a hurry, don't let HF ship it regular mail. It took about 12 days. thanks to everyone who stepped up and gave me help with this, esp. Sam Ross who was in phone contact with me regularly.

I have a purple vacuum line running fwd to the adjustable head lights of my Euro 85, 240D. I dont have climate control so, maybe your purple goes there.

Where would be the switch inside the car for adjustable headlights?

another BTW, This 85 Euro has the mechanical throttle linkage and also a cable, but have not tried to trace the cable yet. It doesn't appear to have any kind of cable choke device.

My son took his car out last nite and says that the climate control works, switches from defrost to car to dash. I had thought that switching might be controlled by a vacuum device. Not sure what the purple goes to yet.

There is a dial to the right of the headlight switch on the 124. Not sure if the 123 is the same or not.

The controller for the adjustable headlights on mine is a numbered "wheel" on the console.

The "idle control" knob is so you can jack up the idle when its cold, its hooked up to the linkage above the IP.

When and if you can, would you diagram a pic of your dash? We have a dial I think to the right of the headlight main twist/pull switch. I thought it was for the illumination on the gauges. Never seemed to work much though. also, I had a 76 stick 240 diesel that had a knob to run a fast idle, but no knob on this 85 Euro 240. Am I looking in the wrong place?

yellow with a purple line is the vacuum line for vac adjust headlights.

I see the yellow with purple running along the drivers inner fender, never bothered to trace it out cause I had no problems until the other week. This line is purple solid and I believe going through the firewall with all the other lines going that way. Could go to a dash switch for the lights? and the purple/yellow is the other side of the switch to the module for the lights. What exactly does that function do? Tip the lights up/ down? or right/left?

the vacuum line going to my adjustable headlights is purple with a yellow tracer and returns from the switch through that rubber "cow tit" thing below the fuse box, (sorry was just the first that came to mind:D)

Can't wait to search out that! What's the point of adj headlamps? focus in/out, up/down? or r/l?

Up and down, they are too compensate for a heavy load in the trunk or back seat, not legal over here.
