Dirty intake valve.What to do?

I have an 87 300d and I just took off the intake manifold to replace the glow plugs. My intake valves are caked with alot of crud. Should I try to clean them and if so what is the correct procedure. Thanks

You can have them blasted with walnut shells, cleans them nicely, or use some seafoam as mentioned, might work.

With a gas engine you use a vacuum line or other to introduce into the airflow, with your car you'd need to find a way to get it into the intake air stream downstream of the turbo.
Here's the problem and it can be a BIG problem: The engine has all the air it needs to over-rev and destroy itself. Add a little fuel, it'll run. With the seafoam going into the intake air stream there will be no way to control RPM or shut it down, pretty risky.

I've not done it to a diesel, hopefully someone here will have better experience.

Could he brusn the sea foam on and mop up the loose stuff with a rag?
If you have a shop vacuum cleaner and hook on one of those little vacuum hoses that computer people use you could carefully scrape and vacuum out the crud and vacuum it out.

Source(s) of Crud

1. EGR soot mixed with:
2. Oil mist from hose from top of valve cover to intake upstream of Turbo.

If I had the time...I'd run the individual intake valve to TDC for that cylinder,
(Valve closed) spray Biodiesel on the mess (let it soak a while) Then vacuum
the remains out with the shopvac.'Blow any thing else out with Compressed
Air.[Mask and eye protection ,Please.]

I'd be more concerned with the valve seating faces and the seats in the head rather than the surface of the valve itself.

The accumulation would tend to indicate that it's probably time for valves.

Although these engines will run for 300K miles, the condition of the valves certainly leaves something to be desired.

The SD needed exhaust valves and all new seats at 185K. It ran acceptably well prior to the work...........difficult to start below 10F, however.

On to another subject. I noticed that my head is a 20. What is the difference between the 20 and 22?
