Napa 3149 Fuel filter for 300SD? & Which Diesel Kleen...

Well. I changed both filters and it seems that the Secondary filter from napa seems small. After doing a search on the net I found that this isn't the filter of choice. After driving, i noticed that it leaked from the bolt and the filter rubber seal. Put the other original one on and made it home. The question i have: Can this filter 'work' on my car until i get an original? Doesn't seem so. The bolt leaks because there isn't a copper washer on the bolt and the rubber o-ring split apart.(found this out on the road)

Should i try to get another one local? Local is Kragen/Autozone.

&

I bought two types of Diesel Kleen at Walmart.
1.Diesel Fuel Supplement
2.Diesel Cetane Boost

Which one do i use? Is it before the filter change or after. Should I keep both(only about $8.50 each)?

thanks

It would surprise me if someone here suggested that using the wrong filter would be a good idea. You are better off with the old one rather than the incorrect one.

What? You couldn't find anyone at Wally World that knew something about a product they sell? I'm shocked!
(I believe the cetane boost would be the preference, but both will work.)

that is the correct filter for a 617.

get new orings for the filter. you will need to remove the bolt which holds it on, and replace them.
I think there is also an aluminum sealing ring on top- Phil sells em at the top of page.
you can order them or bring one in and match it up at most places- NAPA, etc.
I keep a few in the glovebox .

the filter is made by WIX. I for one use WIX filters.

use additive following directions on the bottle.

There does seem to be a variability in the diameter of the secondary filter. The bosch filter or mahle are about a centimeter greater in diameter. I would think that would translate into a greater amount of surface area for filtering and would therefore be a better choice but I don't have any hard data to back that up. Mainly I'm not going to use anything else for the simple reason that smaller size just doesn't look right.

Not all engines use the crush washer (18mm x 22mm x 1.3mm), but all use the "O" ring that fits in the machined out channel on that bolt, (10mm x 14mm x 2mm).
One of the DieselKleen products (white) has an anti gel agent, the other (gray) has cetane boost. Your call on which one to use, consult this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cetane_number

Just wanted to reply or future reference. I did use the napa filter and three o-rings on the bolt. O-ring instead of the crush and its fine. My original problem was loss of power and surging on hills. Now this is gone. I also decided to use Diesel Kleen, the grey bottle which is the cleaner i believe. Just a few ounces to about 5-6 gallons and the results are great. Smoothed out the whole engine all around and its barely noticeable doing 70-75. Will do the purge next and see whats happens.

thanks for all.

Diesel injector purge/clean

Hi, gettin' ready to do diesel purge on my injectors, already replaced g/p's and have yet to drain tank and clean p/u filter. My formula will be: 1 part bio-diesel, 1 part Diesel Kleen, and 1/2 part tranny fluid. I have noticed problems with my tank almost empty going up hills sometimes loses power as though the fuel line is clogged so am almost sure to p/u filter in tank has crud on it. Have already used the algae kill several times but heard it doesnt dissolve old dead algae growth.... will let you know how it works!!!
will have filter ready to replace afterwards....

Actually cancel that thought, I found the thread on Startron tank cleaner which I will try first, the injectors can wait for now. Plus I read that tranny fluid may not be such a hot Idea!!
