No, It was a real ad. They really marketed cars that way back then. They used the "Flaky" approach.

Unlike today, where they typically use the "Comic" approach, to appeal to customers. I'll never forget some of the Honda, and VW commercials I've seen over the years. Some of them have had me rolling..

Im hoping to get out of a parking ticket I received in PA in my 300D that was magically transformed by the time the citation was mailed into a Mercury.

Exactly. How many Grenadas has anyone seen on the road lately?

sadly, or strangly, a man on my street owns one. still drives it daily too. whats strange, is that it still looks really nice. he must have babied it all this time. which is sad.

There is usually an exception to every rule.

The only "same" things I saw on the commercial were both cars were silver, both had blue colored interior, and the driver was the same.

There is no way anyone can confuse a 3 pointed star with a blue oval.

they should have compared it to a 75 300D... more similar appearance the 115 front grille is closer to the granada grille. still it's like comparing an eagle to a turkey.... they are both birds right?

I don't think I've ever seen a "Grenada" on the road....or in a junk yard...or anywhere. Probably a combination of low-sales numbers + all of them rusting away in 5 years.

That commercial was crazy.

MB should have made a commercial that said "Grenada" (crash into crash-test barrier) and then "Mercedes" (crash into crash-test barrier)

Can you tell the difference?

Tyler, it's G R A N A D A.

And they also had an ad campaign that bragged about the perfect 45 degree miter cuts on the chrome window moldings, just like the Mercedes had.. But when the cars came out on the streets, they still looked mismatched.

I even know of a guy who bought a Granada with Granada body ID emblems on one side and Mercury Monarch emblems on the other side--

The only good thing ablut them was the '78 Monarch could be ordered with a 351 Cleveland, mu brother-in-law had one and it smoked the tires like nothing else on the road that year- but it also passed everything but a gas station.

My sister's first car was a Granada. The door fell off, there was so much rust in that car. The rear window leaked. The windshield leaked. Everywhere you looked there was rust.

Did you see the car rocking as it braked to a halt in that video?

Did it even have shock absorbers

That's what I noticed as well. Did it need new shocks right from the factory, or did that one have a couple thousand miles on it from filming.

My college roommate drove a Granada from age 16 til college graduation. It was a 1975 model with absolutely NO frills. 200ci inline six with a carb butterfly the size of a quarter, three-on-the-tree, no a/c, one gauge (fuel), no power brakes or steering. I think his was voted car of the year by the Amish. You cold literally hold the gas pedal to the floor and dump the clutch in first (or reverse) and it would kill the engine!
It lasted forever (the body was going bad though) and delivered reasonable fuel economy. We still remember it fondly.
