My mechanic informs me that I might need to swap out my transmission on my 1980 300TD n/a wagon. I can buy a wrecked parts car that is a 1982 300TD turbo diesel. Are the transmissions fully compatible between these 2 years and engines?

not quite.
you will need all linkage and the bowden cable from the valve cover to the transmission, also the Vacuum valve on the IP needs to be swapped over... it's all iffy. it will bolt up, but getting the vacuum to the modulator and correctly adjusting the shift will be hard. also, the gearing for the N/A to the Turbo is going to be softer on the 1/2 shift, and take off will be more sluggish.
JMHO, but it's not for the faint of heart.
