You also need to swap your W123 oil filter housing as the one from a W126 is different.

The transmission in a W126 operates an electric speedometer so you also need to swap the speedometer drive from the W123 tranny.

The one from the W126 does not have the SLS pump on the head. You would have to swap heads or work around not having the SLS.

Is that possible to do between the 722.118 that is probably in an '80 123 and the 722.3XX that the 126 would have?

How about using an 84 300sd engine & tranny

Don't mean to hijack this thread, but I'm wanting to do the same thing to my 1980 300D 123. Except, I have an 84 300SD parts car with a good 617 turbo and transmission. I would guess the same is true for that engine right? Are the engine and transmission the same length on both cars?

Do I have to be concerned about the rear end handling the extra power, or anything else that hasn't been mentioned already in this thread?

My 80 123 transmission is not shifting at all passed second, just one big flare until the car slows down to slip into first. So I assume the transmission is gone. There is vacuum at the trans... and Anyway, I wanted to use the 123 engine for a gen set I want to build and run veggie. By the way, someone told me that these 617 engines were not good to use for generators because they weren't designed to handle the static rpms. Is that true? Any comments on that?

Thanks...

It will work but you will have to use the 80's oil pan.
