instrument cluster good news / bad news
Hi there,
1984 300sd turbo diesel, 300k+ miles Good news: - pulled instrument cluster without a hitch - repaired odometer by replacing gears - repainted needles to "tequila sunrise" nail-polish orange - replaced outside temp display with one frm fleabay - replaced all lights with LEDs, using the wedge 5 and 74 I learned about from a thread on this forum Bad news: - left over part (see pics below) - outside temp display shows -36F for a few seconds on power, then goes blank - not all instrument lights work Outside temp display... no idea. Searching here said there's a sensor behind the license plate, but which one? Front or back? Is it behind the bumper? I looked and poked and proded and don't see anything - what exactly am I looking for? Instrument lights: there were two colors of the little sockets the #74 wedge lights fit into, brown and black. All the brown sockets work fine, but the black ones don't (I only have two brwn ones, the remaining 6 are black). It was easy to remove the original lights from the brown sockets, but took considerable effort to do so on the black ones. I had to spray in some electrical cleaner/lubricant. I tried pulling the lights and turning them around, no luck. Any ideas? This part here was in my baggie of parts when I took apart the instrument cluster, and foolishly I didn't take pics before starting. Where does this go? Thank you for your input and time! |

That looks like the cover for the odometer gears.

Sure is, I just took mine apart last night, and ordered the gears. It'll be nice to have a working odometer again.

Got it!
Hi, I just wanted to report back with a few things I learned.
1. Yes, johnt49 was correct, that plastic part fit over the odo gears, and everything worked great, yay! 2. Today I got the wedge #74 LEDs working in the little black sockets. Here's how: a) the wires on the lights had to be slightly bent sideways so they went along the thin edge instead of the larger, flat side (sorry I didn't take a picture, if needed, happy to do so). b) the lights have to go in a specific way - if they don't first work, pull out, turn around, and try again. It's pretty neat once they work, my 300sd's dash lights haven't worked in many years. Yay! Now to tackle some more stuff! I still cannot tell which line in the front of the car is the thermometer cable, though. Thanks for your help and time. |

Post a pic of your painted gauge needles if you can. Thanks
