Red And Green Lights Flashing
So I've replaced my GPs and the GP controller which was fried and the *!!!#** 96 still wont start if the temp dips below 50 degrees.
The red and green lights under the mirror start to flash before the gp light goes out and it is a no go. Does anybody have any idea what is going on? I've replaced the K40 with no result. New battery too. I'm starting to get pissed with this thing.

The flashing red and green lights are an indication of a problem with the alarm system. It thinks someone is trying to steal the car and so locks out the starting system. You can crank all you want but the engine won't fire because the FI system is not energized so you get no fuel.
My wife has occasionally had a similar problem with her '96. She likes to lock herself in the car as soon as she gets in -- but the car then thinks it's being stolen and sets off the alarm when she tries to start it. If she starts the car and only then presses the door lock switch there is no problem. If this no-start problem happens below 50 degrees, it means that something in the alarm system has become temperature sensitive and will have to be replaced. I don't know enough about it to point to a specific module, sorry. Jeremy

I would also suggest using the CCU panel and observing battery voltage on screen 23(?) while this is occuring.
SDS ought to be able to read the appropriate modules and help figure out whats going on too.

The '96 (and '97?) do not have that feature.

I dont believe thats correct.
Regarding the trans, yes. There are numerous other systems in the 96 that requires SDS to view.

If the '96 is capable of "using the CCU panel and observing battery voltage on screen 23(?)" then I would like to learn how. Perhaps you can bring your '99 to the March 29 GTG in Santa Rosa and show me?

My '96 does this. With the key in position 2 (engine running or not), press and hold the REST button on N22 for >5 seconds, until the display changes. Then navigate with the AUTO buttons.

I had a great 96 300D, started the alternating red/green flash, called MB they suggested using key to lock left front door, then kept it up, called said go to trunk lock lock/unlock, finally stopped completely, got it to dealer, the sensor was bad, it is VIN specific, were going to order about $500 total to replace, (2000), I traded. OBTW, I got mad at the mirror, hit it with my fist, knocked it loose, broke mirror and windshield, (900) not good. Sure was mad!

One thought came to mind about the original post. Check for signs of water under the rear seat.
