I own two VW diesels (TDIs). They have a serious intake manifold clogging problem with their design. I found the best way to clean that gunky goo is Castrol SuperClean.

Quote"BTW what's the source of this 'goo' in the first place ??" If I remember diesel engine theory correctly it is all to do with the scavenging of the cylinder, to maximise efficient combustion the 'previous charge' must be cleared out or exhausted. To assist that diesel enines have a portion of the cycle where at the 'vinegar stoke with the the exhaust valve open and most of the previous charge on its way through the exhaust port - the inlet valve opens just to give it a good f****** kick or scavenge the last drop of charge out of the cylinder. The amount of valve overlap in a normally aspirated diesel is - I believe - either negligible or very small whereas it is significant on a turbo charged block. Thus the goo may be products of combustion entering the inlet manifold and due to incorrect valve overlap either by design or wear or maladjustment or inefficent turbo or just lots of low load running. I am not familiar at all with automotive diesels never mind Mercs so the above may not be applicable at all!!. One final though - it may be be caused by emissions control systems. I will stop right now - I seem to be digging a deep hole - never mind it may stimulate debate or a cry of 'horse****'. TaTa PS: My last theory class in diesel tech was some 30 years ago-eek!

I seem to remember reading somewhere that the "goo" comes from the egr valve on the TDI engine.

That is correct on the TDI. The EGR valve allows exhaust to mix in. Also the crankcase is vented into the intake. The combination makes a nasty gooey mix which causes all kinds of problems.

basic stupid question
Is there a separate Techron for gasoline and diesel engines? Or is it the same?
Thanks |

last time I read the Techron bottle is said it was for both Gas and Diesel

Is there any harm in disabling the EGR? The theory is that the exhaust gases cool the combustion chambers which in turn, reduces emissions. I am concerned that if I disable the EGR, combustion chamber temperatures will be higher than desireable/designed for.

Great tip on the Disolvit, drivfour!
The "valvecover vent plus EGR" is a problem ... my 603 engine's intake tract was absolutely gross. Crossover pipe about 30% blocked. Connector pipe even worse. My engine would, at speed, momentarily pause and spit something into the intake of one of the cylinders resulting in a puff of brown smoke out the exhaust. I am assuming this was the "gunk" coming loose. Am also hoping this is somehow related to the early failure of these engines ... i.e. chunks coming loose and fodding the number one cylinder, bending the rod. Fingers crossed. EGR on mine now inop ... don't think this does anything except allow the oily fumes out of the valve cover area to stay cool enough to flow to the cylinders instead of coking up when they combine with heat from the EGR ... Machine shop dipped my about 5 times, gave it back and then I spent about 4 hours manually dragging rags soaked in thinner through to clean out (mostly).

Disolvit
Though they have a lot of other citrus-type products, our WalMart doesn't have Disolvit, and I'd really like to have a solvent that's guaranteed to melt egr deposits like drivfour recommends. Any idea where else I can get disolvit?...Does "Goof Off" or "Goo Gone" also work?

Try the Castrol Superclean. It really works and its available at most Auto stores. Believe me I have tried many solvents and this one works the best. If you go on the VW diesel forum www.tdiclub.com and do a search, you will find a lot of discussion on this topic.

I cleaned mine with engine brite or brake cleaner. Did not help performance out any. Some motor oils like the synthetics from Mobil leave a residue that is MUCH easier to clean than some other oils.

Canola oil, Diesel, a bottle brush, then a trip to the car wash. I didn't use it this time; but, I've never seen anything work better than Sodium Hydroxide for degreasing. You know, oven cleaner. Wish I could get that gunk out of the head.
