disable afterglow

Hello, 82 300SD. A few years ago, I put the new style afterglow plugs in with the new relay, The car only goes a few miles a day, and as I have been having problems with the battery being run down, I think that in the 3 minutes or so, that they stay on drawing a lot of power,( along with the lights, heater etc) , I am already at work, and the battery never gets a chance to fully charge back up? How do I disable the afterglow feature ?

I thought afterglow only lasted 45 seconds or so on these cars.

A better idea would be to fit a higher capacity alternator.

afterglow

They stay on for at least a few minutes after start. I realize I should have posted on the Diesel forum, but I would appreciate any help. Is there a higher amp alternator I could use, the one on it tests out ok, but perhaps not able to keep up with the load demands in only driving a few miles each way.

Check out these two threads

Installed a 143A alternator in my W124 (86-95E-class) - with photos

AND

"Alternator" 115 Amp Bosch AL129X works in 123s!

ALSO ,running your Diesel such short operating Periods is BAD FOR IT!
('Never gets fluids up to Operating Temperatures)
[To "Burn Off" all the accumulated Moisture in the Engine Components]
("Carbons Up" all the Internal Combustion components)
You need to take it out for an extended "Blow Out" run (Highway Speeds)
EVERY WEEK!

Let it run a little longer? Walk to work? Drive a little out of the way on your way to work? Poor car.....driving a diesel a few miles at a time and never warming it up is pure torture for the engine.

I have a couple of the old style relays. I'll trade you. If you send me yours, i'll send you mine. And if it breaks on you anytime, i'll send you the other one i have.
