If you build a biodiesel processor, you won't have to make any mods to the car; plus you can more easily control the quality of the fuel you put in the tank, injector pump, cylinders, etc.

Its a lot of work and initial expense to set up though. And you have to work with chemicals, and hope you have a reliable source of used oil or else its a waste of money and you're stuck buying diesel again.

I drive diesels because I like diesels for several reasons, and will continue to provided there isn't a large price premium to do so.

No comments on the 1993 300SD mentioned in the OP?

The 3.5 liter turbodiesel - often hailed (rightly or wrongly) as a "rodbender"?

The diabolically sophisticated W140 chassis?

Well if he is going to grease it, doesn't really matter. What will kill the engine first the grease or the rods?

If this is your first veg oil conversion, I wouldn't recommend that you buy a $20k car to modify. Buy the 300SD, convert it, drive it for a year, and if all has gone well, sell it and buy a nicer vehicle to convert and keep for a longer time.

As for the comment from others about not buying diesel just because it is more expensive than gas today.. that's silly. Next week it may be the other way around.

... W140? I would avoid. a good 126 should be available in the 4-6K range.
a W140 that's selling for 4K has problems that could be quite expensive to remedy. but IF IF IF it checks out, and I mean REALLY REALLY checks out. it's a great price.

Thanks for the info guys....What would be a "rational" price for the G wagon considering it's in great mechanical shape

I suggest also checking on the ML, GL, G-wagen,... subforum on this site. There might be some folks there with a good feel for the market.

I don't know what's "rational," I guess it depends how badly you want a new toy. They weren't available in the U.S. (diesels), so they are hard to find. Personally, I wouldn't want to pay over about $10K for a good driver (not a show car) that I was actually going to use in the winter. Unfortunately, I've never seen a decent one for sale in that price range (I have seen some pretty rusty ones for that price). I don't want one badly enough to write a $20K check, what about you?

thanks for the feedback guys. It's true that fuel costs are just going to get worse over time, it's a wake up call to start using the alternative fuels or else...Mad Max anyone?

To me, $4000-8000. Since it's a rare vehicle the price is whatever the market will pay. Just like the SMART ForTwo's selling for $32,000 there will always be irrational people that will pay stupidly large amounts of money for a low value vehicle.

I'd absolutely love a 300GD but there is NWIH one is worth $20,000 unless its a pristine, low mileage museum piece.
