Its rare around my area (seacoast of NH) to find diesel much less than 4.00 per gallon. There are more than a few with prices up to 4.20 per!

But....I'm driving a gasser right now. And preparing to make a switch to "alternative fuels" in the near NEAR future. Its time for home-brew bio-d.

I was just reading Car & Driver, April '08. If you think Car & Driver sucks, please stop reading and go back to whatever it is you do. Csaba Csere, quotes Al Mannato, a fuel issues manager at API. He explains that refineries fall into two cattegories, catalytic cracking and hydrocracking. Most US refineries are setup for catalytic cracking, which turns each barrel into 50% gasoline, 15% diesel and the rest into home heating oil, jet fuel, etc. Most of the rest of the world including Europe uses hydrocracking which produces 25% gas and 25% diesel. (Henry is right Europe is better) He doesn't say what they make the other 50% into. Because the European refineries produce more gas than they use, about 1 in 8 gallons of our gas comes from Europe. Switching the refinery process would take 5-10 years, according to Mannato. Building a new hydrocracking refinery would help, but the last refinery built in the US was in 1979.

I live within 30 miles of 2 refineries and we pay the most for gas and diesel in the state of Washington. I just saw D-2 for $4.19 tonight. To make matters worse the local Biodiesel thieves try to keep their price at least $.50 more than D-2.(No I'm not moving to effin Arizona, I know the fuel is cheaper, but it's too hot. Apologizes in advance to all of you sitting by your computers with your AC on in Arizona.)

Actually right now in Arizona it is 73*, sunny and warm t-shirt weather! Sure it gets warm, well ok hot, but at 118* in the shade you can pour SVO into your tank along with Biodiesel and it burns and starts easily! Actually we won't be sitting by our computers under AC until the middle of may when it's about 95* outside!

Another tank full today at the last station I could find under $4.00/gal, $3.999.... Highest price I found was a truck stop out in the woods of south suburban Boston at $4.279/gal... Had to drive up to the pumps to get the price since the Billboard prices weren't up for diesel, go figure... I did notice that this station had off-road diesel for $3.79/gal...

Just went up to $4.16 today. I wonder where it will level off? At this rate its going to be $5-$6 pretty soon, probably by summer.

There is no oil you can use as a drop-in replacement for diesel...well, your engine won't last long, but it'll run for a little while. The oil needs to be heated before its injected. Some people have success mixing VO with kerosene, or petro-diesel, or gasoline.

We just went for a hike, on the way out a Sunoco had diesel for 4.20, on the way back in a few hours later it was 4.40. That's fast inflation...wish I had filled up

We've gone from 3.85 to 4.19 almost everywhere (some places still at like 4.15) but it doesn't appear to be slowing anytime soon! Gas went back down about 12 cents to 3.34 for RUG.
