Where to mount a CB? (W123)
 

...because the search function ignores the word "CB."

For the folks who have them in 123s, is there a handy place to put them? Maybe instead of the ashtray?

I have mine mounted on the passenger side console. It's within easy reach of the driver and doesn't seem to bother the passenger.

I don't think I've even seen a CB in 25 years, are they still around?

Better than cell-phone when SHTF. For example, CB'ers were the only people knowin what was going on with Hurricane Katrina. Also better than radar detector for detecting speed traps.

Mounted my Galaxy 66 w/SWR antenna tuner & meter on passenger side of console hanging sideways.

OK, my dad used to play with them in the 70s; I don't know much about them and assumed that they pretty much disappeared when cell phones came out in the 80s.

I assumed they got outdated as well. I remember how popular they were in the 70's. My aunt and uncle each had one in their vehicles and one in their house. I always thought the "handles" people used and the code they spoke in was cool.

So has the CB atmosphere changed? It seemed back in the 70's there was lots of joking around and pranking. My cousins and I would mess around with the house unit and everyone we came across would talk and tolerate us (I was 8 and the oldest in the group).

Talk about embracing the 70s...my handle back then was the Blue Baron for our '74 240D which, not coincidentally, was midnight blue.

I wanted to put one in the 240D, never got around to it.
I still have one that would work in the Jetta just fine. Not sure if I have an antenna of any sort, but in the worst case, you can still to go Radio Shack (or a hamfest) for these things.

I agree with most of the posters above. If you can get around the foul language and buffoonery, then CB is the best way to spend time in traffic, find out about cops, find the best way through construction and make it to where you are going (I've heard people getting directions over CB sometimes...)

Makes me want to get out my 2m rig and listen to that on the drive (instead of the $13/m sirius radio)

Fortunately fewer and fewer people are using them, thus even at/near large cities CB Radio has sustained its integrity without alot of noise as best method for obtaining real time reports of traffic conditions, speed traps, alternative routes, cheapest diesel fuel, emergency roadside vehicle repair, tornados, floods, brush fires, rioters and wrecks in the street, etc.

And one of the coolest things I've heard myself when driving down the road was police breakin onto the truckers' band during gunfight chase scenario of murder suspect at Louisville - relaying description and plates of the vehicle, deputizing everybody to bash him if they saw him. Reconnoitre transmit/receive over CB airwaves covers about 5-8miles yet spans an easy 50-80 miles real fast with msge repeated down the line.

Next, someone is going to tell me that they have a leisure suit and shag carpet.

Nah, i think yesterdays' disco leisure suit and shag carpet fans are today's ipod techno freaks.

Meanwhile as every old world HAM radio fan knows, shortwave broadcasts like Radio Netherlands, Radio Vietnam, Thailand and others provide far better coverage of world events than sanitized and censored cable and satelite tv networks can ever hope to achieve.

Law of diminishing returns, i think, where pulped mass market media becomes end of the foodchain - not the beginning where best and brightest stuff occurs.

My neighbors FIL has one in his minivan(for when they drive from chicago to FL).. We went on a beer run one night and decided to screw with the religious nut trucker.

He was raving how he saw jesus in the desert. My neighbor was like "Yea, well I just saw him at the Dennys at the lunch counter. His shirt said Jesus, he had a tattoo on his arm that said Jesus and he even showed me his license which said Jesus on it"
