plans 4 my 240D... must read
 

I'm very excited about getting home back to the US and get started on getting my 240D where I would like it. While deployed to Iraq (still here for 2 more months) I shopped craigslist for a 300SD originally. I'm not a automatic kinda guy so that limited my choice to the 240D. I love to modify my vehicles and well the 300D with a swapped 4 speed or a rare swapped 5 speed seems like a pain in the ass if you dont have the space to do it in. So right before I went home on my mid tour leave I found the one I wanted. I saw more online that I wanted more but I couldn't be there to purchase them. About 3 days after landing at home I picked mine up for 3,400 dollars. Considering these were luxury cars in their day that is a steal in my book. So what's a man do when he gets something that's new to him? Well you read up on it and learn as much as you can. Once I bought it I drove it as much as I could before I had to fly back to Iraq. I fell in love with how solid it feels. I'm used to driving a slow vehicle so it wasn't disappointing to go from zero to sixty in half a lifetime ;) I can thank my 84 toyota 4x4 for that one ;) That vehicle is it's own forum. It has a few issues that need to be worked out but that's the whole fun of it. Mechanically it runs great. The glow plugs have already been converted, the hoses are viton for biodiesel and it runs really great. The clutch is solid and the ride smooth. Being a modifier by nature I wanted to give my 240D the best chances at success. Being deployed is a great way to save money. So with a new car in the stable it was time for me to buy!! So what did I get? Well for starters the mechanical fan has to go. So I bought a flex-a-lite fan from summit racing. Getting rid of that hunk of crap mechanical fan is a great way to boost power and while doing that make your cooling system more efficient. I know this from experience cause my Yota has black magic bolt on fan w/shroud and it makes a ton of difference. I also ordered a painless wiring adjustable theromstat with relay. That will help me dial in the temp I want the fan to kick on at. I also ordered a painless wiring circuit boss fuse block /w relay for any additional electrical items I may wire up in the future. I've read a lot about the few types of injector nozzles and the benefits you can get by installing them. Well of course I had to order the Bosio nozzles ;) On ebay I bought a set of used injectors that I can install the nozzles on. I might have them extrude honed and then popped and adjusted all while still driving on the current set. Had to get a K&N too ;) **************.com has a lot of good things on his site. A few things I ordered... valve stem seal replacement kit..injector socket with pick... power steering filter..air cleaner rubber deals.. :) now from dieselgiant.com I ordered... diesel purge with bottle... thermostat... bosio nozzles.. injector heat shields... and i think that about does it from him. on ebay i picked up some amber bosch fog lights.. wood grain ash tray... wood grain piece that the shifter sticks out of.. odometer repair dvd.. factory first aid kit... factory tool kit... factory warning triangle... hmmm.. .what else?! ohhh an engine oil pre-luber... think that about does it. I'm really excited to get home and start getting my car up to the way I want it to be. It's great as it is... but we all know... that there is always room for improvement. These cars last forever and well mine will too. It's good now but in a few short months it will be better. I'll post pics of everything I do so you guys out there that have questions can have a pic reference to go by. Well bed time for me. :D

Glad to see you got yourself a 240d. I own a 1984 240d euro model 4speed. I'm definetely curious about your flex a lite fan setup. I took my original fan off of my car and istalled a fan and fan clutch from a 300d. Cooling efficiency seems to have improved as the car heats up faster in cold weather. Also noise is less at 75mph. I haven't felt much difference in terms of power and would like to know if your setup helps you in this area. Stay safe in Iraq and happy motoring.

I know what you mean about the speed - I had a Nissan V6 that was fast for a 1991 pickup, but sloooow compared to most everything on the road now!

I have never had a complaint about the speed of my 240D.

Heard a bunch of you guys were running for Congress - an entire platoon from all over the country. And you'll be glad to hear Kentucky is already issuing "Iraqi War Veteran" license plates. Tons of construction development going on at Ft.Knox.

All of yer schemes for the 240D sound good. Toggle switch bypass for the aux fan is something I wanna do with my 300SD. And what about wheels? Some 15" rims from later versions will bolt straight across, others wont.

My friend, i highly recommend you ditch that K&N. The OEM paper filter is more then good enough. The K&N does not filter as well as the OEM filter. When i say OEM filter i dont mean a FRAM paper filter, i mean a proper MAHN filter.

Where does one get a good set of Bosio nozzles for the W123? My '85 300D could use a set!

Couldn't agree more with the above. You are doing a lot of things to hopefully improve your car. Don't do things to compromise it. ;)

I'm really a diesel head by heart and love their simplicity and ruggedness. For all those other diesel heads out there... there is no place in the world that has a better representation of diesel vehicles than Iraq. As most of you know the US military uses one primary fuel JP8. People call it dirty diesel but it works in everything from a single cylinder generator up to the Blackhawks and jet fighters. They have all sorts of nice civilian vehicles that I only wish they had in the states. Turbo diesel Toyota Landcruisers with full floating rear axles and factory snorkle. Four door Mitsubishi pickups that are intercooled and turbo charged. Four door Ford Rangers diesel. The new MRAP which is a mine resistant armored to the hill International. All kinds of Mercedes semi trucks. I've even seen those G wagons I think they call em. All diesel! One of my favorites is our LMTV. It's the replacement for our old 5 ton. It has a 7.2 liter Caterpillar turbo diesel, Allison push button transmission, Rockwell axles, central tire inflation system. This is one thing I'll miss about the military. All the great vehicles! Ohh we call gasoline.. MOGAS... dunno why but its a funny name :D

Dont forget to add a lubricity addative if you are using JP8 or other such things. They will extend the life of your IP and injectors! Great addatives are B100 (mix to make B5 net) or a double dose of Power Service.

dieselgiant.com has a lot of great pictorals and the bozio nozzles for sale.. i don't run jp8 in my car was just saying that the military uses it. i wonder if the stanadyne pumps they use in the humvees are tweaked to use the low lube jp8... hmmm...
