Ditto that..............
Since when did the Kalifornia government make sense.

They won't allow import of some of the newest, cleanest diesels made. Yet, no emissions testing is required on older diesels or a barely used one. Go figure. It must amaze some folks that live there to see their high taxes at work.

What I don't understand is a local inspector tells me that the sniffer doesn't check for oil burning on a gasser. In fact, he did one recently that they had to turn on the fans to blow the smoke out of the garage, yet it passed???

But I guess we all really have it made considering some of the rigorous checks the do across the pond in the U.K.

Burning oil = Higher hydrocarbon output. Lots of burning oil would kill the catalytic converter after a while and surely make your car fail an emissions test. Well...a CA emissions test anyway...

I'm more than willing to submit to this; there are so many cars on the road in these parts that have no business being anywhere but a junk yard.
In CT for cars 1996 and newer they just see if they have any codes. Which is BS because they charge you $20 for something that Autozoo does for free. But I guess it forces people to fix their cars. As long as a modern car is running properly the emissions are low, more so considering I think we get the same cars that CA gets.

The older cars are run.

Yeeehaa!

Well, I was about to start a new thread about the typical BC emissions test for my 300D, when I thought: Welll...maybe give it a search and see what turns up. Wow!! What a lot of opinions and differing results.

I was a little worried 2 months ago, when I noticed a black cloud everytime I floored the Benz. Well, when oil change time came around, I decided to change the air filter cos I couldn't see 'light' through it anymore, and wow, it made a difference. That filter was only about a year old!

So anyways, I thought I'd post my results out on this thread. Out of an Opacity percentage of 30% allowable, my tired old 84 300D with 405,000 on the clock posted a reading of just 0.92%!! Yeeehaaa!!

I was soooo worried that the Benz would fail. After all, I got all the symptoms. 'Dancing Cap', oil coming out of my PCV union at the crankcase...heck with with the PCV hose out, the smoke comes out of the Valve cover outlet like a old-fashioned diesel train!!

Still, I've never had it not start in cold weather, not even hard to start. Then again, it never really gets cold here in Metro Vancouver, though it did start easily last year in minus 5 or 10 or something like that. She pulls good on the hills, and if some Hondai or Toysubishi decides to ride my tail, I just step on it and leave them in a nice cloud of smoke.

I dunno...I'm not just happy I passed. I'm happy cos I got such a low score

How do they test the emissions on them? is it at idle or a snap rpm test? They did some testing at ORNL about testing diesel rigs as they pass a station or onramp they talked about using it at some point to monitor junkers. I think it all got shot down but scary i once had a vw quantum had like 300K miles turned the ip pump enrichment up crazy u couldnt tell unless u used that last 1/8" of travel then lol wow u couldnt see anything behind u good for people riding your butt.. or nice corvettes

In BC...

Here's a video of the test. Basically, they run them up to 100 kmh for 147 seconds. I believe the test simulates things like stop and go, driving uphill and at speed. From the "sound-proof booth" next to the vehicle, I could see my car bobbing up and down...dunno why. but it did. Either way she was running it so hard and I could hear that diesel screaming even through the sound-proof booth! Later when I commented on how loud it was, the tech said that it was because of the diesels that they have to wear protective hearing! Funny....hardly hear a thing inside the car itself, except for the turbo whine
