82 240 uses oil

Hi,
I've got an 82 (greymarket probably euro) 240D that uses oil (1 qt every 150-300 miles), no big puddles in the driveway.

The blocked breather test for blowby (block the crankcase breather at idle count to 10, let go. <5 sec = bad blowby, 6-7 better, 8 + good) let me go to 10 easy, so it doesn't look like blowby.

Cold starts OK down to 7F w/ Shell Rotella 15W40 in the crankcase.

I just did the valve lash when I did the valve cover gasket, almost all the valves were tight- less cold engine clearance than the spec. in the chilton book -.004" intake, .016" exhaust.

Not sure if I starts easier now, but it runs rough for the 1st 15 sec or so or until it rev's up w/ a stab at the pedal.

A mechanic I know looked at it, said oil from the top of the engine down might be fuel leak instead- replace those leaky injector returns, not taking any engine work now.

I'm looking at a compression test next to confirm or rule out blowby (it's been started cold on VO by previous owner w/ system similar to greasecar- single HIH, coolant heated filter, VO return looped into supply.)

Any ideas or good books to pick up? The chilton book is pretty sparse, and the MB CD seems that way too.

My guess is bad valve seals. I had a Suzuki with this problem (endemic in the 1.3 Suzuki), and it ran great aside from smoking on startup, fouling plugs every now and then, and using a quart of oil with every other fuel fillup.

Are you getting a lot of smoke on startup? Does it look blueish? Smell like straight fuel or fuel mixed with oil?

That shut down test is unreliable and can do damage to your engine seals. I wouldn't draw any conclusions from it. Long shut down times can be accounted for by a leaky seal.
Do you have the early or late vacuum pump? The early pump with the breather line going from the pump to the air filter can cause oil consumption when the vacuum pump diaphragm fails.
Clean the engine off really well at a car wash and keep a close eye for leaks.

Yes someone might have dropped an earlier engine in there as well. The early engine had a vacuum pump line from the pump to the breather area. As mentioned there should be no oil in that line if you have it.
I would tend to discount bad valve rubber seals. Yet I have seen a mercedes with a valve job done and no seals at all installed. Either by accident or intent I do not know.
I have to wonder if your oil control rings are not gummed up from the vegatable oil use. Some of your other indications seem to indicate the engine should not be burning this much oil. It will do no damage to add a quart of marvel mystery oil to the crankcase for the next few oil changes. This stuff might help free up your oil control rings if they are gummed up.
Also remember to check the front and rear crankshaft seals for leakage. You are going through or leaking quite a bit of oil.

First, make sure you have the correct color dipstick for your engine...
Second, make sure with the correct color dipstick that you do not fill the oil to beyond the midpoint between the safe and max lines... lots of discussion on this in archives.
Third, do both a compression and a leakdown test.
Fourth, put new valve stem seals ( and valve rotators and new springs if you can afford them at that time ..cheap done when you have the engine opened up that far anyway... )
