Disc brake retainig pins

So I went to install new discs in the front today. I thought I could remove the pins w/o damage. However I don't think it is possible. Is there a good local supplier besides MB that could have them in stock? I see them listed as a hdwr kit @ Autozone but it is a special order. I am in Mass.

Thanks

Would nails work until the kit comes in?

What is the problem removing the pins? Can't you just remove the clips and tap them out? It would take quite a bit of force to damage them.

I have never bought a pin yet.

On the ones that use the hair pin to hold them in (Girling?) I have replaced the little hair pin before, but on the ATE never a problem. Just drive them out with a drift or a 16 p nail with the point ground flat.

Yeah, like others said -- pull the clip if there is one on your pins and push them out, or use a blunt nail as a punch to drive the ones with integral friction springs out. My car has both -- springs up front, clips in back. Order a few prior if you think you might need them, but they are reuseable if they don't break, so you shouldn't need new ones. The clips and springs ones are not interchangeable, so make sure to get the kind you'd need.

They can fail (the integral spring falls off ), but that is rare enough that you'll probably be hard pressed to find anyone local who stocks them except the dealer.

If one breaks on you, you can jury rig a replacement, but when it happend to me a few months ago, I decided it was more unnecessary risk than I wanted to take and just drove a different car for a day while I stopped at the dealer for replacements. FYI, I'm not sure if a nail will be long enough for a jury rig -- you'll need it to go through and then sercure it on both ends. The nail I use that's small enough to puch the pin out isn't long enough to reach all the way through the caliper so it can be secured on both ends.

I'd be surprised if the dealer stocks them.
