82 240d vacuum problems
Hi guys im pretty new here, so hey everyone. The name is Paolo.
Anyway, I have an 82 240d automatic and I started having hard shifting problems and all that good stuff. I realized that all my vacuum lines in the engine compartment were all out of place and missing some components. I was wondering if anyone had some good pictures of their 240d's (automatic) engine compartment. I'm looking for a picture around the area where "the black box" and the brake booster is, so that I can copy the way the lines are arranged. Please and thank you. :) |
Paolo see this link
http://home.comcast.net/~phantoms/vacuum/fuel_egr_240d_auto.jpg What happened? It shifter hard all of a sudden? Recently had an oil change? :) |
Hey pat,
recently did a valve adjust and all of a sudden I had bad shifting, well also because the vacuum lines were all in weird places. I didnt bother with them because the car was shifting fine until the adjust. kind of a weird situation. I sent you a PM |
You probably tugged on one of the vacuum lines (or your mechanic did) and that caused the lack of vacuum to the transmission, which defaults to hard shifting.
By the way here's the link where I got that diagram from http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=192440 |
hmm in the diagram number 63 "orifice" what is it? I dont have that for sure in my car. what is it and where can I get one?
|
Junk yard is easiest perhaps. If car was shifting well prior to valve adjust continue to look hard at what has changed. This might be the time to invest in a mity vac type of device to check the integrity of the system. It could be as simple as a vacuum junction device has a crack now from moving it.

vacuum orifice
Hey Paolo, just trying to help you out here, but there is probably a vacuum orifice on your car, incorporated in with one of the three or four way unions. There's alot of good info on this site on the benz vacuum system, including this link on tuning the vacuum modulated transmission on W123s and W126s: http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/158216-its-critical-how-you-set-your-transmissions-vacuum-system-your-diesel-mbz.html
and any associated links on this thread. Good stuff. |
Also check www.dieselgiant.com website for vacuum issues. The plastic levers in the box are required for smooth shifting on the 240D. Mine had worn away and when I replaced them it shifter smoothly.
