Could be drug money.

Buy said car, take it right to Carmax, get a $3k check and walk away.

Will you be ready when....

The guy with the big blue pistol comes to make his "purchase"? Meet them at the local police department.
Have the money marking pen.

Thats an interesting idea. Imagine money with serial numbers that the Fed are looking for. How does that work? I mean if I go to the bank with $4000 is it documented in any way that these certain serial numbers came from me?
Yes, I am the guy who buys cars and sells them for a profit. I'm also parting out a 1985 300TD wagon right now and selling the parts here on the forum and on Ebay. Last week I sold the rear torsion (sway bar) thing to someone here in Vermont for like $65, and also so the rear taillights for like $100 which included shipping to some forum member in NH. Both of these people where very happy. The same day that I recieved payment or the next I had them out with FedEx ground and sent tracking numbers. I'm providing a service, learning the car, and enjoying my Hobby. I just listed a bunch of parts on Ebay lastnight and so far not 1 person watching them. Believe it or not there is alot of work involved. The Beetle was 1.5 hours away. I drove 1 time to check it out, and one to pick it up with the bus. I lucked out that the engine was OK. I work as an Automation Technician and make a little money on the side doing this hobby thing. I'm not going to get rich, but it helps when I have 3 kids.

This guy called and talked on the phone with me, he sounds OK, but there wasn't anything that he said that a scammer couldn't say. What bills do want $5, $10, $100? (I can print them all). Paranoid, or cautious?

He did say we could go to the Police department. It would be on a Sunday so who know who would be at the Police station. I'll call them tomorrow and get their viewpoint.

No $4k isn't enough to pop up on the radar screen. But it would attract the attention of the IRS. Say someone who has no real job, keeps putting thousands in the bank. Where is it coming from? They want there tax money, so they start investigating. You could use the buying and selling of cars as a front.

When I lived in boston about 25 years ago, the local mobsters were running their cash through some little pizza joint. These guys were making $9000+ cash deposits at the local bank branch every day (that's a lot of pizza). They ended up charging the bank manager too.

I sold my truck in a similar deal. I had the guy's name, address, phone, email, etc. Then I had his cash and he had my truck. That was all I wanted. The cash spent just fine.

If I feel the car is not worthwhile upon arrival I simply turn around and leave. No hard feelings aftrer all it is business not an intimate relationship.

I think the guy selling the VW was worried about the Cash being counterfite money so he wanted the credit union meet to verify that it was real money. They have made a lot of changes in the last 10 years in how the paper money looks so maybe having the credit union look at it is not a bad idea. If some one gave me a new $500 bill I might never have seen one before and would not know if it was real or not. By being carefule the worse that can happen to the seller is he looses the sale.

If someone gave you a new $500 bill is US$, it would be counterfeit.
On July 14, 1969, the Department of the Treasury and the Federal Reserve System announced that currency notes in denominations of $500, $1,000, $5,000, and $10,000 would be discontinued immediately due to lack of use. Although they were issued until 1969, they were last printed in 1945. These notes are legal tender and may be found in circulation today; however, most are probably in the hands of collectors.

Why is this even a topic? If the guy shows up with cash take it and sell the freakin' car...If he shows up with some BS check don't take it. Elementary...plain and simple. It's his money. Don't worry about anything else, it's none of your business. Cash in hand can't be beat...
