I agree 100%. I don't see the problem. If I had somebody offering to show up in person, hand over $4900 in cash with no hassle, I'd be ecstatic!

It is simple. He shows up, you play the salesman bit, make him happy about your car, take the cash, give him the keys and he drives away.

If you think there is any sign of foul play, get his drivers license info and the plate number of the car he shows up in.

Forward the cash to me. I will verify if it is spendable free of charge.
Actually can you visualise what might be going through this buyers mind about now. Just swap mindsets.
Lets see cash is no good with this guy. What do you think would be? Perhaps he's off his meds? Cannot even exchange the money at a police station? Is there a full moon out there this weekend honey? He might take rolls of dimes if he hates paper money? Got any ideals?
I also forgot to ask him if he would do the deal in a graveyard. That way he can leave no stone unturned if he wishes. But he probably will not go for that either unless a thunderstorm is in full force at the time. Maybe it's just some kind of cult thing? You just had to want a volkswagon bug with an automatic. Why could you not have wanted something else? Are you happy now? Maybe all people out there that sell german cars are weird.

Not as weird as the people who buy German cars.

if the person pays in 50's, check and see if the watermark matches the portrait printed on the bill. around me, people have been washing 5's and printing 50's on them. the only thing different is the watermark. it's a different dead president.

Craigslist

I have had much better luck on Craigslist than Ebay. Most people will only take cash!!!! Since the cashiers check scam cash is the way to go. I have bought a few cars and sold a few paid cash received cash. The first time it made me upset why the seller would not take my check. After thinking about it he was right. I do not know him and he does not know me either. Much easier than Ebay. Go fight paypal for months and then get 10% refund if you are lucky!!!! No more Ebay,

Everything you want to know about that pen is contained in two words: Iodine and starch.

Iodine reacts with starch and turns black. In the absence of starch, it remains brown. Most buyers have no idea that it is this simple of a device, and is defeated by simply printing on unstarched paper.

I really think you're being overly concerned. If he's willing to meet at your local PD, then chances are he isn't pulling anything hinkey. Get a photocopy of his driver's license just in case but I'd say just because he doesn't ask any questions over the phone doesn't make him suspicious. I know I can tell more looking over a car in person in the first 30 seconds than I can "chatting" about it. He's probably going to show up, look it over and decide on the spot if he wants to buy it or not...sounds reasonable to me.

It's funny as I had the opposite experience last week. Went to look at a car from CL in some craphole Massachusetts town and they guy told me where it was stored (in a warehouse in the crappiest section of the craphole). He said, call when you get there and I will meet you. OK, I get there and don't like the looks of things...I call and immediately it bounces to VM. I leave a message saying I am heading to the McDonalds down the street and will meet him there...30 minutes and he never shows, doesn't answer his phone and never returns my call...I figured I was done for if I hung around and waited for him...but maybe I was just being paranoid? But why else would a guy have you come all the way to this dumpy area and then not try and sell you the car if he really had one to sell?

I drove home and never heard from him again. Just odd is all.

Thanks for everyones input. Interesting story NHDoc. When I talked to the guy on the phone the other day he asked a couple of questions. No, one of them wasn't "Are you nuts?". We will see what happens. No big rush for me, if I loose a sale, oh well, I'm not worried about it.

I think it's sad that we've come to the point of being suspicious of cash. I can certainly understand your point. I just hadn't ever though that even American dollars might one day be "suspicious." Good luck!

That would be the equivalent of about $2000 in cash, though wouldn't it, at best?

For a little while, until the dollar losses another 50% of it's value.

If not cash, then what?

If you are not willing to accept cash payment for a car, then perhaps you are not the type who should be selling a car to an individual.

Cash is king. Everything else pales in comparison.

My 2 cents,

SteveM.
