Perhaps he's just laundering a little drug money. Maybe that's why he didn't ask many questions.

Asking those types of questions...including what does the odometer show gets people into all sorts of trouble... the answers can not be trusted to make any difference in the condition of the vehicle...
Best to cover the odometer, and take the car to an independent agency like LemonBusters .... too many times cosmetics covers up mechanical abuse...
Asking and believing the answers to most of those questions is how con artists take people.

So what if the person owned the car for 15 years... for example... but let their sister borrow it and she ran it on the Houston Freeway without water in the radiator ? Someone on this forum did just that... but when they are still able to drive it... and you know they have owned it for that long... it just gives rise to way too many wrong assumptions..

I don't ask those questions in order to get believable answers. I ask the questions to get the seller talking so I have a chance to assess the character of the seller.

I was just going to say this after reading this post, but you took the words right out of my mouth. I've had this happen a couple times (at work, with work money), these pens arnt really that secure in checking money on the spot (but do help).

So in the end I basically made a friend in MA who is buying cars and selling them for a profit. I may have been able to sell it for more but I've got a lot going on right now juggling things. Its almost to the point that I may make this into the B word and make it legit. Anyways I put the front grill in which wasn't hard and painted it. Came out nice. Would be a fun and easy car to paint. I had it on Ebay and decided to let it go early to a nice young lady and her dad for $4,800. He is bringing a local bank check tomorrow. A little over a week from now I fly to JFK and pick up a 1985 300TD which looks real nice. Now I can just move the registration and insurance from the Beetle over. I've also started body work on the 1983 Rabbit diesel, that has a nice body and will be sharp! More pictures here: http://asnowsquall.smugmug.com/gallery/4689716_HR6m7#277314082_dyKgz

We got the grill w/o the foglight holes, but I couldn't find the front lower bumper part online-just the whole front bumper.. did you cut out the old foglight holes and put something else in there or find the part somewhere?

thanks...

also- back on the topic of this thread... my family has always had good luck with online car stuff- my dad "accidentally" bought a 77 VW camper in Oregon a few years ago on ebay and a 73 MGBGT a while back, and both were great finds. My fiance bought a 79 Rabbit diesel via a private sale on vwvortex and had it shipped from CA. it's an awesome car... maybe we've just been lucky....

Well I just sold it today for $4,800 cash. The grill was 2 pieces and I purchased them off Ebay. Search around you can find them without foglights, I think this may have been the place and one of the parts http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/BUMPER-GRILLE-vw-volkswagen-BEETLE-98-03-front-grill-02_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33640QQihZ013QQitemZ230243068905QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW
