I finally got a crack-free dash for my 300SD!!!

Yep, I have it installed now. I'm just buttoning things back up and replacing a few things while I am in there. I really can't wait to shine this thing up and see it at full glory!

Thanks daw_two! Nice meeting you in Arkansas!

Forget the dash. Did you refinish the wood shifter/console?

Mine looks Sooooo nice after I redid it. It's a very straightforward process. Use spray paint remover to take it off, will take a few applications. Be careful not to scuff the wood.

When done, use "After Wash" sold at Home Depot paint dept. to get the chemicals off.

Then apply Spar (outdoor) clear varnish. Get as dust free an area as you can. Sand lightly after each coat, use clean cloth with mineral spirits on it to clean off the dust, and apply 2nd coat. For the last coat, thin the varnish 5% with mineral spirits.

The pleasure was all mine helping you beautify your car. I'm glad Saturday worked out since I'm busy the next 3 weekends.

Don't use paint stripper.....simply soak the pieces in acetone....it will float right off.....let it do the work for you....

Got me some cheap dash wood for my W123 300D

All right! Congrats! Two questions: what (if anything) are you doing to protect this dash from the Texas sun, and how do you plan on polishing the dash?

I am working on restoring a console piece as well. My process is a bit simplified compared to yours, though. I use a thick spray-on stripper, sand down to 400 grit, apply one coat of red oak stain and then use polycrylic for the finish. The results are quite nice and the test piece has a thick coat of finish just like the original ones do. I have yet to test the longevity and durability, though. I guess I will find out when I install it.

The rest of my wood has been replaced with very good to excellent pieces.

I plan on having the windows tinted with the best tint that I can buy with the highest UV rating and having it installed and warrantied by a professional shop. I plan to use a sun shade every time I get out of the car. I plan to rent a covered parking spot at my apartment complex and apply some of that marine-grade vinyl protectant that I am forgetting the name of right now.

I saw a nice crack free dash at PNP yesterday in a 420SEL (think that was the #) and has really nice crack free red or maroon seats. didn`t notice any wear on the fronts, and the backs were good, except for the top of the seat, the stitching is apart.

Would that protectant be 303?

Question -- how did you fit that big gauge cluster in there?

I just removed the ashtray and the little tray at the front of the console.
Pretty easy. Gauge cluster was made from some 1/4" board cut to size
with some zebrano veneer glued to it.
