Oil weight, blow-by, etc.

Hi guys,

I have a 1985 300D and its oil level keeps dropping. The shop said it is blow-by - an expensive problem to fix. Is this common in the MB 300s? I am currently using 15W-40. Should I go to a heavier oil to help solve the problem?

Thanks a bunch!

John

Loosen the oil filler cap while its idling with the engine warmed up...does it move around much? If it wobbles then blowby is "minimal" if it sits still then you can say there is "none" if it blasts off into the sky then you have "a lot" of blowby. Check this and report back with your findings.

I'd not recommend a heavier oil.

More likely is that its leaking oil.

Doesn't it have to be a pretty obvious oil leak to affect the level significantly? Seems like you'd notice some pretty big patches.
