Yeah-

I've got an old Spitfire frame lying around that would be nice and light to use for something ( I have picked the thing up by myself so it can't weight that much). But, I don't have anything non-FWD to put in it.

I just has a 1988 Honda Civic and sorry but the 617 would make the Honda into a freak show and would most likley make it fold in half or something. Theres not a lot of heavy metal in this car, you can push the fenders in.

If this car starts to get so small and light to help the fuel mileage out you start to get to the point where theres little safety and you might as well be on a motorcycle. Just a thought.

Excuse me sir, your not planning to strap yourself into that road rocket after drinking that beer are you? (1971 Honda on Ebay up to over $4K and reserve is not met)

Wow... Haven't seen one of those on the road in about 30 years.... I believe it was the precursor to the Civic and it's got a motorcycle engine pushing it..

"Yes but the 2 speed is a box that hangs off the rear of the tranny - independent of the rear end. Theoretically, it could mount in any car.

There was actually a small home built car badk in the '80's that used a tractor Diesel and got like 125 MPG. I saw one in Cleveland at a museum but I can't recall the name. I have a picture of it somewhere..."--Evan

"Theoretically" it could cause excessive driveshaft angles on car with one piece driveshafts..( UNLESS it IS independent rear suspension ).

and it seems you did not check out the reference url I posted...

The engine was called the CVCC... It had 3 valves per cylinder, 1 exhaust, 1 lean mix intake and 1 rich mix intake.... I bought a used 1976 Civic in late 1978 with 70,000 on the odo and a 18 month loan... Within the loan period it went thru' 2 CVCC engines, a transmission, 2 sets of tires and both front fenders rotted off the car... It was a fun, cheap car for a poor college student and it got 30 mpg during the "first" energy crisis while I was driving up to 1000 miles a week and even then I knew it was a POJ...

Yep, you got me... I was in a hurry to respond to the other poster...

The OD box on the 'vette actually takes the place of the tailstock and the tranny is the same length as the original 4 sp. I think they use the same driveshaft for both the auto and the manual version but I'm not 100% certain.

As for the Honda, I believe it was a "600". My buddy had a pea green one in HS.

Rick, You have the frame, RLeo has the tractor sitting at his place... may be his father's... might have to pick it up at night... LOL
His father is ex police officer....and he and Randy are both great shots..
Did you read about that Centurion from Mechanix Illustrated ?
It was really well done...and used sandwich foam construction which is very smart in every area....

If you want mileage and something thats a home brewed vehicle try building a trike. You would be a big hit a Sturgis if you showed up with a turbo OM617 trike with a Mercedes hood ornament sitting between the ape hangers. I have seen trikes made with 302's but never an inline 5 turbo diesel.

I need a high mileage good handling car for my daily commute.

I considered a 450sl type body with a 617 diesel.

Does anybody know if this would fit ?

My other option is strip all the weight out of my 300SD or 300D.

Its a very small car and very slick!.....low frontal area and just georgous handling.

Cheap too. I bet you could buy one with a bad motor for a couple hundred. It would not surprise me if you could bolt one of those little rabbit diesel motors right in or one from a fwd dasher. I think the dasher even may have had a longitudinal motor instead of transverse!

Now you're cooking!...maybe 65 mpg!

I like this concept. Pretty much a cheap, throwaway Porsche so even the purists wouldn't be too bothered. Drop in a VW TDI engine, strip as much weight as possible, skinny tires, lower the car, clean up aerodynamics a bit. You could potentially have a really fun car that could get really good milage as long as you're light on the throttle. Not sure how the engine would fit under that low hood though. The engines in those lean over over at about a 45 degree angle.

It'd be hilarious to swap wheels and tires and autocross it on weekends.

And what makes you think a 450SL is lighter than a 300D?
