Horrible day: Texas Road Trip Breakdown
 

This happened within the first 5 miles of my highway trip. Oil hose fell off, probably got loosened when the hood was put on/ taken off from the paint shop. My 8 hour drive turned into a 13 hour ordeal. I caught it in time before any damage was done to the engine, thank goodness. What a mess and a $60 tow! I did make it to Austin, finally.

Oil hose? Man I'm glad you caught it before any damage. I hope that oil didn't get on your new paint! :eek:

Oil hose fell off? What oil hose....There are none that should be remotely affected by removing the hood....thats for sure. Most of them are so tight that you have to burn incense while trying to remove them in hopes nothing breaks! :eek: :D

Glad nothing happened to the engine/car!

This stems from a PO repair, who was a tractor mechanic. Rather than replace to motor mounts and run the upper oil cooler hose correctly, which tore from all the vibration I'm guessing, he bought some generic high pressure hoses and clamped them off at both ends. Where its rerouted now comes over all the stuff rather than under, near the driver's side hood hinge.

All of the work I've had done to the car, I forgot this "little thing".

I assure you, the correct OEM part will be installed and routed correctly the moment I return. For now, I have twice the clamps on a new hose, tools, and enough oil in the trunk to fill it back up and limp home, if it happens again.

Funny thing, Kerry warned me about this hose and this happening when I first got the car in Aug.

3 Lessons learned here

1. Never let something go because it’s working fine at the time.
2. Always watch your oil pressure, you never know when disaster can strike
3. Listen to the advice of your forum members.

Looks like quite a mess, yeesh. Good idea to get the right lines and cooler in there right away!

Man I'm glad nothing happened to your car!:eek: It seems there was a post awhile back where someone wanted to fix a leaky hose by filling the rubber cracks with super glue!:eek: He should see this right now!:D

good thing it didnt happen in california, theyd get you for an oil spill.

Replace those junk mb hoses with some stainless steel AN hoses like I did. Its in the thread what upgrades have you done to your MB by boostnbenz.

He didn't have "junk" mercedes hoses on there..

What de our cars do for warning when the oil gets low or the oil pressure drops to low? Do you atleast get an "idiot light"?
My 535i had a low level sensor. Has anyone modified their cars to give you warning? Doesn't seem like it would be hard to do. I'd like something like a red LED and audible. Not to make up for stuff thats Mickey Moused, but our cars are getting older and sometimes other people are driving the cars who don't really look at the pressure gauge. You could tell them if you see the red LED come on, shut the car down ASAP. The oil pan being steel, it should be easy to adapt a oil level sensor. It seems to me that someone must have done this in here.....

It's been done - I recently recall either nhdoc or rs899 talking about it and some other forum member rigged something up with detailed instructions. I'll try and find the thread - it's definately a cool idea.

I solved that problem by not letting anybody drive my Benz who wouldn't look at the oil pressure gauge :D

Thats the nice part of this whole idea, anyone who drives the car can watch the road and think of other things without feeling the need to look down at the gauges all the time. And the other thing is we are not talking about and expensive, complicated, time consuming idea.

That's fair enough, I suppose. It's really not a bad idea. :)

Just for the fun of the argument, though, who doesn't look at the gauges at least every 30 seconds or so to check the speedo anyway?

what? doesn't everybody have full peripheral vision and keep the window, mirrors, and the gauges in full view at all times?
