So here it is then. 15,000 miles a year must be close to average.

Numbers are just ball parks.

Vw TDi
15,000 div by 45 mpg avg x $4.29/gal diesel local= $1,430/yr.

617
15,000 " " 28 mpg avg x $4.29= $2,298/yr.

Something European gas

15,000 "" 24 mpg avg x $3.30= $2,062/yr.

Maybe a Honda Civic

15,000 30 mpg avg x $3.30= $1650/yr.

Numbers may be off slightly but it gives you an idea.

My point is it is almost time for a newer car for me.

I have the following with their uses:

'91 Subaru=only car I drive in the winter. I drive it once in a while in the summer. Right around 5,000 miles per year. It has 257,000 miles and runs like a champ but the body is starting to fall off. Doesn't cost me very much otherwise. Just fuel and oil changes and maybe a ball joint or brakes every other year.

'67 Dune Buggy=another toy when it is running. about 1,000 miles a year if I'm lucky.

'85 300SD= main car in the summer, NEVER driven in the winter. Less than 10,000 miles a year. Doesn't cost me much either but I've slowly been picking away at the little things that have been bugging me.

I hope the Subaru will last me another year or two until my school loans and my motorcycle are paid off. I was thinking of selling the 300SD when the Subaru kicks the bucket and using the money toward a nice A8.
The A8 will be my year 'round car and my buggy will be my toy along with all the bikes. It is kind of a chore juggling cars in my garage and driveway over the summer.

But the A8 i assume is V8 along with the fact it probably requires Premium fuel which is around 3.50 a gal. But i know how you feel with driving a newer car.

I have my benz in the garage in the winter, and use my Infiniti as my year round car. I love them both, and since the tank on the 240 is small, and it gets good gas milage, i keep it around :-) Just to give you an idea of how much i drive, i have put 15K on my infiniti (using it daily) since august. so basically i drive a little over 20K a year. THATS ALOT OF FUEL

I hear you, I am looking forward to this school thing ending so I can start making some money. I'm tired of driving old cars, I want to buy my uncles E350 sport when he is done with it. I'll keep the SDL of course but I am tired of driving junk 6 months out of the year. Its a 4matic so I'll put some smaller wheels on it with winter tires and it will be a beast in the snow. I want to start skiing again as well, so it will be a perfect ski car.

Can't be worse than the SDL. Man I can't beleive how much work these things need sometimes. I put almost $20k into it and it still needs $10k more.

Its just never ending, now I just spend XXXX amount per year and stop after that.

Personally, I think the spread between diesel and rug will close during the Spring. Cold temps up north put a high demand on heating oil, thus, diesel went up. During the Spring, the gas prices always rise due to more demand and Summer reformulation. Diesel mileage will improve with Summer fuel too.

You should read about fuel prices in the truck forums......they are collectively not a group of happy campers.....

I can honestly say that I'm glad I'm not in that situation. Including the cost of the car, upgrade wheels, euro lights and maintenance over the last 7 years (95% of the labor done myself) and 60,000 miles I have less than $5k into the car. I think I am way ahead of the game.

I'm almost in the same situation with school though. I am burdened by school loans. When my school loans and motorcycle payment are through I will have around $400 more in my pocket every month.

I got my Civic before diesel was $3.00/gal. It gets nearly 40 mpgs, runs on RUG and is actually fun to drive. It starts easily in sub freezing temps and has no drivability issues before it warms up either.
A diesel as a daily driver? NAH!

Diesel prices should be DROPPING this time of year

Now that winter is basically over, I'm hopeful that diesel will come back down to earth.

I was just looking at biodiesel processor, and now I'm hearing the grease sources are drying up; everybody wants it.

If gas was $3.07 at Costco (March 19), then seems like diesel should be
$3.25. Seems like those in power figure if we're getting 30% better fuel economy, then we ought to pay 30% more for fuel.

I drive about 17,000 miles a year at 24mpg in my 300SD, thus I use about 708.33 gallons of fuel. At $4.13 a gallon (highest I have paid so far) thats $2925 a year.

Since I am unwilling to drive anything but a MB....the best I could do would be to switch to a 190d 2.2 manual....and maybe get like 38mpg. That'd be $1847 a year in fuel...a significant savings. But, finding a good condition example of that car in an equal sale/purchase scenario to my current car is unlikely....plus the hundreds of $$ in taxes....and registration....etc.. Insurance might be lower on a 190....but probably not by much. Also, I'd not be happy in such a tiny little car, maybe as a secondary vehicle, but not my only vehicle. Additionally, I could never let go of my SD, its a Hatterasguy situation. My lovely may be driving a 190d later this year if we can find a good deal on one. So we'll have at least one higher-mpg vehicle in the family. Though mine isn't all that bad. If I drive steady at 50-55 I've managed as high as 29.7mpg!

In the end, the savings aren't all that significant....not to me anyway.

We are paying about 30% more for diesel. $3.25 vs $3.07 is not a 30% difference...its only a few percent. 30% higher than $3.07 works out to around $3.99

The savings of not making monthly payments on a new car more than make up for the small amount I pay more at the pump.
