I'm with you, I'd get out as soon as I could if I were you, and into that Audi A8L.

My sources are quoting diesel at $6.25 a gallon within the year.

If diesel gets to $6.25 then food is going to get reeeeal expensive, as will everything else. Not to mention it will kill the budgets of school systems/bus services/public transport. At that price it costs a public bus about $1 a mile to drive just in fuel costs. Insane!

$3.07 ..........
I don't know where your pricing is from, but here, the budget stations are $3.96 a gallon and Up

This diesel thing ain't going away, and it sure ain't going down. $5.00 will be here by July 4th.

Indeed!

I hope a LOT of people make this terrible decision to dump their MB Diesels. Thereby lowering the prices of the cars because there are so many out there.
I have a few more that I would be able to run on WVO.

People are so short term minded these days. But I guess that is where some of us can take advantage of it! Thank you short attention span people!! I LOVE YA!

Oh, an Audi A8L, that should get REALLY good mileage!

I'm with you there! I'll be keeping an eye out, especially once I sell my Jeep. Who knows, I may fall into a CDI yet.

It's a good time to be in the gasser truck/SUV market, too. I've been on the lookout for a mid-90's diesel Suburban just because I want a diesel, but you can get a much newer, lower mileage gas one for a lot less. The diesels are running $8-11K depending on condition, with 170K+ miles. Which is about what '02-'03 gas Subs are going for with under 100K. The same vintage (mid-90's) gassers can be had for half or less of what the diesels are going for. It's getting real tempting. At less than 10K miles a year and only occassional camper or boat towing, I'll never put enough mileage on it or do any real heavy duty towing to recoup the extra cost even though I'd prefer a diesel if I could find one.

There is a mint, loaded, low mileage '96 4x4 F350 crew cab w/351 that's been for sale (not surprisingly) for about 7 months now, parked in the same spot. Before the winter he was asking $12K firm. I've been toying with the idea of offering him half that and see where it goes even though it's more truck than I really need.

Besides, the difference between gas and diesel prices should come down soon as we get into the summer driving season. Diesel is usually cheaper than gas in the summer.
I look at it this way, my 96 e300d on the open gets about 36mpg, and city about 27. Now, for me to go out and buy a brand new vehicle with all the features my car has, I am going to have to spend over $45,000 for the same size car. A 2008 Lexus ES350 runs on premium fuel, and compared with my diesel, I am still ahead of the game, and my miles per gallon are "road proven" by me, not estimates given out by the government. I keep very close tabs on my fuel consumption, and have a Scangauge attached to back up my manual record keeping.

That was sarcasm I take it.

A 2001 Audi A8 gets between 15-17 around town and 23-25 highway.
With the 300SD I get around 20-22 in town and 23-25 highway.
A little less if I mix WVO/diesel.

Right on FI!

For our family car:

We had a Toyota Matrix that got 28 MPG (pretty pathetic for such a small tin can car!)

we sold it and got a Jeep Cherokee that got 17 MPG

We came to our senses, sold it and got a 300TD that gets 25mpg (average)

when I did the calculations, getting the 300TD put us WAY ahead of the Jeep in MP$ (and when you factor in all the repair costs on that vehicle in the year we owned it, it is even a bigger difference)

In terms of MP$, we are behind the Matrix....BUT, our insurance is about the same, but we have no car payment. So if you add in the $280/month to the MP$ figure, we come out ahead of the Matrix, too.

PLUS - there is the joy of driving a MB that the Jeep and Matrix can't touch.

I second that..

I alocate $200 a month for any repairs I may need.. and I've been doing well so far with not having to do anything major.. Just small things.

so I see reparing the car as a "car payment" and the fuel prices.. I can kinda deal with

A diesel as a daily driver? NAH!
You apparently haven't driven any of the newer diesels.

I second that. Never finance a vehicle unless you absolutely have to and if you do, pay it off ASAP. The last time I had a car loan was almost 6 years ago and I paid it off within a year. Both of my current vehicles were purchased with a check.
