Do I understand this? To reduce the smoke coming out of the air filter and housing, put a sealer on the top of the filter housing, put the top on and screw it down - and the smoke goes down the blowby tube? I see a good bit of smoke coming out of the air filter housing in my 81 300SD. Always assumed this was the way it was designed back in '81.

I think you are missing the point. Remove the aircleaner top. The rubber hose that comes from the valve cover connects through the top to the oil seperator. Mine is round, about 3 inches across. The bottom connects to a return line to the crankcase for the seperated oil. Another tube coming out of the top allows the seperated air to go to the engine with the fresh intake air.

On mine, the top of the oil seperator is held on by two bent metal tabs. We are talking about sealing this top to the bottom. Mine sits loose and has been allowing oily crankcase vented air to escape rather than get seperated. That leaves a lot of oil inside the air cleaner. Maybe in your case smoke is escaping the same way.

Yes,tyl604 I believe you misunderstood. The whole idea is to seal the top of the oil separator not the air filter housing. Over time, probably due to heat and/or vibration, the top of the oil separator doesn't fit as snug anymore. Once this happens, some of the oil tends to come out around the top and eventually soak the air filter. Resealing has drastically reduced that problem on mine.

I wonder if it was originally sealed? When I had my air cleaner off, I sprayed brake cleaner down the seperator to clean. I think as much came out from under the top as through the delivery outlet. The RTV is curing now before I reassembled. Also discovered my AC mount had a broken arm (rear position next to the manifold - it had started wearing on the turbo oil line). Looking for a replacement.
