Battery good, NSS ok (?), absolutely no starter.

Honestly, I've searched and this seems like it has got to be one of the easy ones but....

With no warning of any issues developing, I got in this morning, did the pre-glow, turned the key and...nothing. I wiggled the shifter to no avail. I tried to jump it and got nothing. This evening, I put it on the charger for several hours and got the same result. With the key turned to the far right (not engaging starter), if I cycle the shift lever I will get a click and the glow light will go on and off (NSS ok?) Glow plugs are getting warm.

Any ideas?

Did you try to start it neutral?

When my NSS was on its way out, I could start it in neutral. I'm not sure if they just die all at once. I would guess it's the starter, but I could be wrong.

tap the starter with a mallet and then try to start it. If it starts, then replace the the starter..Either way, you are looking at a starter replacement...

Jump terminals 1 and 3 in the junction box on top of the right front fender in front of the battery. If the starter engages, problem lies in either the ignition switch or wiring. If the starter does not engage, probably a bad starter or bad connections at the starter or in the starter.

Thanks for the diagnostics. I'll try these tomorrow. Sounds like a new starter is probably in order...

Mallet on starter trick worked. Now no glow. No glow light on dash, no hot glow plugs. Battery on charger.

Strip fuse perhaps, if you car uses one. My knowledge is only of the 124. I'm not sure why that would die now, but it could have. If it is the same as the 124 and you need one let me know. I believe I have 2 or 3 spares. Was your battery dead?

I dunno, after charging, it started right up. Hmmm...must be electrical gremlins. Time for a new starter at the very least. I still need to upgrade to the newer style glow plugs one of these days. Thanks for the offer of the strip fuse, might need one in the future.

I think that decision is premature. You haven't ruled out wiring problems. I'd try jumping the terminals the next time the problem surfaces.
