OM603 noise level

I have a weird behavior on my OM603 engine. When cold starting - really cold (well below freezing), it will idle super smooth the first 10-15 seconds, then the normal "diesel clatter" comes.

What causes this? Just wondering, could it be a change in injection timing to help cold start? I've never heard a smoother running OM603 than my engine when stone cold..

It's the factory afterglow. The afterglow stops within 60 seconds, then the diesel clatter starts. The OM606 engines had a different relay with (up to) 180 second afterglow, you could retrofit that if you wanted to... it would keep it quieter for another 2 minutes, but the noise really isn't a problem. It would be good to verify the timing though, if you have not adjusted it yet.

Best regards,
