Local MB Dealer has 96 300D for sale. What is good price?

it's forrest green, and it looks to be in pretty fabulous condition. of course the price on the window is high, but what should I expect this vehicle to be worth?
it's the non turbo 2.5L
that said, should I even be interested in this vehicle? what are the bad points? what are the good points?
I am thinking of replacing the little woman's astro van with it. she is unwilling to drive anything older...
thanks!

Depending on condition & mileage...Atlanta area would be $7500-11,500. at a MB dealer

I'm guessing they want something North of 15 for it.

Wanna fill us in?

oh no, not even close to those #'s... but I was not wondering what a dealer would charge, I was wondering what it is really worth, and if I should even be interested in it. what are the pro's and cons of the non turbo 2.5?
thanks.
I believe it has around 220K, and the dealer is asking 6500 or so for it.
it looks pretty good, but over 200K and the non turbo made me pass on it, since they didn't really want to go down any on it.
seriously, what is the real world value on such a car, and how bad are they really to drive? mileage? power?

I had a dark green non turbo, 300 with the 6 cylinder, and outstanding car, I liked it better than the turbos (83, 87, 92 2.5) I had about 185 on it when the lock out unit went out, I traded at the dealer for a 99 E300. Never had a single problem with it until the lock out.

That seems about right to me, a lot of miles though but its cheap.

I wouldn't buy a 1996 because it was the first year of the W210 so you don't get any of the nice updates or new equipment. Also it doesn't have a rack, they still used the recirculating ball steering which is okay but the rack is better. They don't have the 722.6 5 speed, just the old vacuum controlled beat it with a stick to get a downshift 4spd. They also don't have the turbo, drive a turbo back to back with a NA 606 and thats pretty self explanitory. The early W210's also had weak structures and failed a few frontal crash tests, MB fixed that in 1998 I beleive.

W210's are cheap these days, get an updated one.

thanks hattie!
that's about what I was thinking... not a bad price, but not a good enough car for the money.

First go to ALLDATA.com and look to see if there are recalls....and check the titles of the service bulletins which have been issued for exactly that car..
that sort of stuff can help you decide if it is a good car to be haggling over...

I paid a little more for that for mine. It had 139k on it, and so far, it is simply an awesome ride. It is very smooth, and has decent power for a NA motor. I use it for all highway driving, and at highway speeds, it is a dream to drive.

It was also involved in a collision recently, on the left front, and it came out like a tank. Although there was $4000 worth of damage, it was mostly cosmetic.

I consistently get low 30's MPG.

I paid $7300 last May for my 96 with 196,000 miles on it. True, it is a non turbo, but I get buy in stop and go traffic with no problems what so ever. Get it on the open road, and you will be surprised at the ride and handling. Only major issues I have found about this particular model are the glow plug thing, and the spring perches rusting out. As far as the glow plug thing, you will get that on the later models too. Milage in traffic 26mph, open road 35-37 mpg. I have a scangauge attached full time, and also keep my own records regarding fill ups, and this is the actual milage I get. When I bought the car, the prior owner gave me all the service records....timing chain and tensioner replaced, transmission serviced, all fuel lines replaced, and generally the car was in great shape.
The non turbo thing was not a big issue..I figured that the transmission would take less of a beating by the fact that less power was being sent to it.......some drivers like to punch it from one light to the other and end up wondering why that trannys blow out. I look at it this way, for me to go out and buy a new car with all the features mine has, I would have to pay at least 45-50 grand, and that ain't about to happen in my lifetime....good luck in whatever you decide to do.

You couldnt pay me to own a 210. Ask an independant what they think of the two cars back to back (W124 vs. W210). I own both. I dont want to hijack this thread, but the W124 with the diesel engine are nearly indestructable. Im sure the diesels in the 210 are nice, especially the turbo, but the body and chassis around it are crap, imho.

Way to threadcrap.

Seriously, you are welcome to your opinion. The W124s are either nearly unavailable (the '95) or much older. Some people don't mind electronics and want to drive something with some creature comforts.

Excellent advice. Go for a '98 or '99, but they are up near $14K to $15K, or more, depending on the seller.

I forgot about the motor mounts. I do need mine replaced. And I did have to get the glow plugs replaced. But the car is awesome. In my opinion, it is solid, as I noticed in the recent crash it was in.
